Miriam Margolyes has revealed why she doesn’t live with her partner – despite the couple being in a relationship for 54 years.
The Hollwood actor, 82, who is best known for her role in Martin Scorsese’s The Age of Innocence, recently opened up about her long-term relationship with her partner Heather Sutherland.
While appearing on an episode of Table Manners with Jessie and Lennie Ware, Miriam – who also starred as Professor Sprout in the Harry Potter film franchise – revealed the reason she doesn’t live with her other half.
“I’m in love with my partner and have been for 54 years,” she said. “We don’t live together because we’re both professional women. She is a historian and academic, and I’m an actress and documentarian.
“Her work is in Indonesia and so she lives in Amsterdam, but we try to be together as much as possible, especially in Italy. She used to live in Australia as well.”

The pair met while working on a BBC radio drama after Miriam had graduated from studying at the University of Cambridge.
Miriam also revealed during the podcast that she had undergone a procedure called transcatheter aortic valve replacement – which she called a “refined” operation and stopped her from having to have open heart surgery.
“I’ve got a cow’s heart now,” she joked, adding: “Well, not the whole heart. I’ve had an aortic valve replaced by a cow’s aortic valve.”

Jessie then asked: “Is that quite common?’ to which she replied: “I think it’s rather refined, actually!”
She continued: “I don’t know how common it is. I’d never heard of that operation. But it saves you from having open heart surgery, which would be infinitely more invasive.”
Last month, Miriam branded herself “pathetic” for failing to overcome her weight problems, after revealing it’s left her with spinal issues.

She confessed that she would indulge in cheesecakes and fudge when she should have been focusing on her health – and even predicted she’ll end up in a wheelchair.
Speaking on the How To Fail With Elizabeth Day podcast, Miriam described her weight as a “major failure” as it’s left her with spinal stenosis, which occurs when the space around the spinal cord becomes too narrow.
She said: “The one thing I have not conquered and should have conquered is my weight. I am a blubber mass. I am fat. And to be fat and 82 is truly pathetic.”
