PrettyLittleThing has been slammed online and branded “disrespectful” after they seemed to celebrate Gemma Owen’s recent breakup with Luca Bish.
The daughter of footballer Michael Owen took to Instagram on Wednesday, where she revealed that she had split from her Love Island boyfriend Luca Bish.
Following the breakup, the fashion company, whose creative director is fellow Love Island alumni Molly-Mae Hague, shared a picture of Gemma, 19, with their 18.8 million followers alongside the caption: "New chapter for our girl @gemowen_1.”
But the post did not go down well with fans, with one penning: "It's really disrespectful towards their relationship and very odd for a fashion label. Leave them alone for now they're only human. Anything get followers & likes…. of course, money don't make this about your business… [sic]"
"What a strange post for a business to make. How is her breakup relevant to your working relationship with her?" another suggested, with a third adding, "What has this got to do with PLT?????? anything for clout.”
Beneath the since-deleted post, a fourth added: "That is incredibly unprofessional to put up such a post on such a personal and what should be a private matter!"
Pretty Little Thing has been approached for comment.
Luca, 23, and Gemma met on the 2022 season of Love Island, where they finished in second place, alongside other contestants like Indiyah Polack, Dami Hope, Tasha Ghouri, Andrew Le Page and series winners Davide Sanclimenti and Ekin-Su Cülcüloğlu.
Gemma’s statement came as a shock to some fans, with most people believing that the couple were going strong despite living apart.
Her full statement read: "To all my followers, I wanted to let you know that Luca and I are no longer in a relationship. It wasn't an easy decision but ultimately this is what is best for us both right now."
"Many of you have been on this journey with us from the beginning, and I wanted to thank you for your continued support as we start our new chapters."
Meanwhile, Luca responded after the story had initially broken and posted to his Instagram story: "Switched my phone back on after taking some time out to clear my head after an emotional afternoon to thousands of messages and news articles about my breakup.
"As you all already know, sadly, Gemma and I made the mutual decision earlier today to go our separate ways.
"We have been on such a journey together and have made some amazing memories… we will remain good friends and I wish nothing but the best for her."
Their relationship has long been the source of speculation, with some fans previously questioning whether they were still together.
Just two days prior to the story, Luca told reporters at the TV Choice Awards that he and Gemma were still good.
