Prince Harry made a romantic promise toMeghan Markle on an African safari trip – telling her: “Trust me, I’ll keep you safe.”
The Duke of Sussex, 38, made the vow to his future wife, 41, after they were given a scare by wild animals as they slept in a tent.
The couple, whostepped back from senior royal duties in 2020, travelled to Botswana together in 2016 when their busy schedules finally aligned for their third date.
Botswana is a country that has always been close to Harry’s heart. He spent time there after his motherPrincess Diana died and carried out a great deal of conservation work there in the years since.
They spent the trip on safari, sitting around the campfire and drinking cocktails made from river water.
Harry, writing in his book,Spare, revealed how on one night they were given a scare when an elephant came up to their tent while they were sleeping, causing Meghan to “bolt upright”.
Moments later, Harry said the tent then shook from the roar of lions.
The Duchess asked if they were going to be okay.
That’s when Harry replied: "Trust me, I'll keep you safe."
It's a phrase the Duke repeated through his memoir, which was released earlier this month – when it became thefastest-selling non-fiction book ever, with the English language editionselling more than 1.4 million copies on its first day of publication.
And speaking on theirNetflix documentary, Harry said: "My job is to keep my family safe. But the nature of being born into this position… and the level of hate that is being stirred up in the last three years especially against my wife and my son, I'm generally concerned for the safety of my family."
He has also previously explained that one of the reasons he agreed to his multi-million dollar deal with Netflix was so he had enough money to pay for security in order to keep Meghan, Archie and Lilibet safe after their British tax-payer security budget was pulled.
Extra details about Meghan and Harry's African trip were revealed in the unofficial biography Finding Freedom.
Harry was "delightfully surprised" by how down-to-earth Meghan was when it came to "roughing-it" for the week, according to authors Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand.
The Duchess reportedly packed few clothes, cleaned her face with baby wipes and “happily wandered into the woodlands if she needed a bathroom break".
A friend of the couple said: "The fact that they're both as happy just throwing on a backpack and going out to explore… I honestly think these experiences will never stop for them."
