The Queen will miss the Braemar Gathering in Scotland on Saturday, despite traditionally attending the historic Highland Games event while on her summer break in Balmoral.

It is understood that Her Majesty, who has been battling episodic mobility issues in recent months, will not attend the event andPrince Charles will join spectators in watching competitors take part in sports including the hammer throw and tug of war instead.

According to theMailOnline, a royal source said: “The decision has been made for The Queen's comfort.”

Over the years, the Queen, 96, has shown her love for the Braemar Gathering and has never missed the event during her record-breaking 70-year reign.

What’s more, this year’s Highland Games is expected to be particularly poignant as it is the first time that the event will take place aince being postponed due to coronavirus restrictions.

The games’ origins dating back some 900 years, and the event has a deep connection with the royal family after Queen Victoria began attending the Braemar Gathering back in 1848.

The monarch’s decision comes after reports that she had been “carefully considering” whether she would be able to go in spite of her ongoing mobility issues.

During her ongoing battle with her mobility, the Queen has been forced to cancel various public engagements and has been seen out using a walking stick.

Most recently, it’s been reported that the Queen will also break tradition by appointing the new Prime Minister at Balmoral Castle rather than Buckingham Palace for the first time in her reign.

Earlier this year, the monarch “reluctantly” missed the State Opening of Parliament due to her difficulties.

Speaking of the decision, A Buckingham Palace spokesperson said at the time: “The Queen continues to experience episodic mobility problems, and in consultation with her doctors has reluctantly decided that she will not attend the State Opening of Parliament tomorrow.

“At Her Majesty’s request, and with the agreement of the relevant authorities, The Prince of Wales will read The Queen’s speech on Her Majesty’s behalf, with The Duke of Cambridge also in attendance.”

It’s also believed that Prince Charles, 73, has been making impromptu visits to see his mother during her stay at Balmoral, something which a royal expert has claimed is “highly unusual”.

Ingrid Seward, of Majesty Magazine, told The Sun : “It’s highly unusual for Prince Charles to make these kinds of impromptu visits to see his mother.

“But Charles is a very thoughtful person — and who else can she rely on now Prince Philip has gone? Everyone thinks they normally see each other all the time, but they don’t."
