Piers Morgan, 55, left Good Morning Britain last month after he sparked over 50,000 Ofcom complaints following comments he made about 39-year-old Meghan Markle. The presenter said he didn’t believe a word Prince Harry’s wife said as she opened up about her life in the Royal Family.

Following his departure, many of his ex co-stars have stepped in to fill his seat alongside regular host Susanna Reid.

In a new interview, Richard Madeley, 64, insisted he’d be up for being her new co-host.

He said: “If the phone went and they said, ‘Would you come in and talk?’ of course I would talk to them.”

But, the presenter said he prefers “sitting in for people” rather than having a permanent slot, adding: “I have all the fun and very little of the responsibility or flak.”

The former This Morning host has stood in for Piers on several occasions in the past and admitted it caused a mixed reaction.

He added to The Metro: “I remember when I started sitting in for Piers on Good Morning Britain, I’d have a look at Twitter after I’d done a programme and, yes, you get some nice comments but you also get horrendous abuse and, from time to time, death threats.”

On whether the abuse affected him, he said: “I personally couldn’t give a f***,” but acknowledged how trolls could affect younger presenters.

According to Ladbrokes, odds on Richard to replace Piers are “stronger than ever”.

Current odds stand at 2/1 for him to step in for the controversial journalist on a permanent basis.

Fans of the show have expressed their thoughts on the presenter possibly joining the show.

One commented: “YEY @gmb get #Madeley behind the desk #judy can have a guest slot #gmb.”

A second wrote: “Get him in please!”

A third penned: “Can we have Richard Madeley back one day? Think he’d be good at holding ministers to account… remember when he cut off Gavin Williamson?”

“@GMB please get him in now or at least a few shifts,” a fourth added.

Piers was a regular presenter on the show for over five years.

Addressing his exit, he said he had to “agree to disagree” with ITV over his remarks and stood by his views on Meghan.

Earlier this month, the father-of-four jokingly asked his fans to “help a jobless man out” by buying his book Wake Up.

Ahead of this, he said he doesn’t know what he will do next.

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays from 6am on ITV.
