Shane MacGowan’s heartbroken wife’s statement in full as The Pogues star dies

Shane MacGowan’s long-term wife Victoria Mary Clarke has issued a lengthy statement announcing The Pogues singer has died aged aged 65. Taking to Instagram on Thursday, she wrote: “I don’t know how to say this so I am just going to say it.

“Shane who will always be the light that I hold before me and the measure of my dreams and the love of my life. And, the most beautiful soul and beautiful angel and the sun and the moon and the start and end of everything that I hold dear, has gone to be with Jesus and Mary and his beautiful mother Therese.”

Victoria went on to say: “I am blessed beyond words to have met him and to have loved him and to have been so endlessly and unconditionally loved by him and to have had so many years of life and love and joy and fun and laughter and so many adventures.

“There’s no way to describe the loss that I am feeling and the longing for just one more of his smiles that lit up my world. Thank you thank you thank you thank you for your presence in this world you made it so very bright and you gave so much joy to so many people with your heart and soul and your music.

“You will live in my heart forever. Rave on in the garden all wet with rain that you loved so much. You meant the world to me.”

Victoria’s post was swiftly flooded with many messages of condolence. One wrote: “So sorry to hear this very sad news Victoria, please accept our thoughts & prayers for Shane & all of you there from London. RIP.” A second commented: “I am so so sorry Vic sending love.”

A third typed: “I’m devastated. He meant to much to everyone that had the pleasure of listening to his music. Sending prayers and condolences to everyone who knew him, especially you @victoriamaryclarke there will never be a another like Shane.” Shane had been in and out of hospital after being diagnosed with viral encephalitis last year.

Victoria had since been updating fans about his progress on her social media pages. In one of Victoria’s final posts, she shared a picture of her spouse in hospital using breathing apparatus.

Alongside the snap, she thanked fans for their support and sent “love and prayers” to those also suffering. According to the NHS, viral encephalitis is uncommon but serious and causes inflammation in the brain.
