Strictly star Krishnan Guru-Murthy reveals heart condition

Strictly Come Dancing contestant Krishnan Guru-Murthy reveals he has a heart condition that will inhibit his training as he prepares for the ballroom

It’s not long until the new series of Strictly Come Dancing kicks off again, and celebrities and professionals alike are already deep in rehearsals.

However, Krishnan Guru-Murthy has revealed he is unable to commit to as intense a training routine in comparison to the other stars due to a heart condition.

The newsreader, 53, revealed he suffers from the genetic heart condition hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, which led to the death of two cousins.

The condition will inhibit his ability to train as hard and intensely as other celebrities, especially in dances that tend to raise the heart rate.

Talking to The Mirror the star revealed he felt it was now or never and he had to take part in the autumn hit show before it was too late.

Health: Strictly contestant Krishnan Guru-Murthy, 53, has revealed he has a heart condition which will inhibit his dance training as he hits the ballroom later this month

Taking it easy: The 53-year-old confessed he is unable to commit to as intense a training routine in comparison to the other stars due to a heart condition called hypertrophic cardiomyopathy

He said: ‘I even asked my cardiologist if I might drop dead live on BBC1. ‘No’, was his answer. But he couldn’t give me an absolute guarantee. I have to be careful of raising my heartbeat into the red zone; that final 15%. I shouldn’t go there. It’s where people with my condition drop dead.’

Krishnan has the full backing of his wife Lisa who encouraged his decision to get out his comfort zone and hit the dancefloor.

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy causes the wall of the heart chamber to thicken, meaning they can become stiff and therefore reducing the amount of blood taken in and pumped out to the body with each heartbeat.

Krishnan revealed people have been asking him to do these sort of shows for years as he explained: ‘What if I kept saying no? It might not be physically possible for me to do it now, that remains to be seen. But it certainly won’t be possible in five years.’

Strictly is due to launch on September 23 where the celebrities will find out their professional dance partners for the first time live on air.

On Saturday the show dropped their first teaser trailer which saw this year’s professional line up as they stunned in gold glitzy outfits during a passionate dance number.

As excitement for the show heats up it was revealed on Saturday that one professional dancer has been already left disappointed.

Neil Jones has been reportedly left without a celebrity partner yet again ahead of the start of the upcoming BBC series.

It’s almost here! Strictly is due to launch on September 23 where the celebrities will find out their professional dance partners for the first time live on air

Gutted: Strictly star Neil Jones has been reportedly left without a celebrity partner yet again ahead of the start of the upcoming BBC series

The show’s bosses have failed to give the professional dancer a star for the sixth time during his eight-year run on the programme.

Throughout his time on the BBC dancefloor, the star, 41, has only had two celebrity partners, Alex Scott and Nina Wadia.

According to sources from The Mirror, Neil is ‘gutted to be have been overlooked.’

However, aside from Strictly, the star is also preparing to become a father for the first time with his fiancée, Love Island star Chyna Mills, 24.

The insider revealed: ‘Of course it’s disappointing, but Neil feels like he’s won the lottery at the moment, so he won’t be sweating it too much.

‘He and Chyna can’t wait to welcome their new arrival, and at least his lesser role in this years’ series means he will be able to be more hands-on.’

Strictly representatives told MailOnline that they do not comment on pairing speculations.
