Strictly Come Dancing dancer Amy Dowden has opened up about her chemotherapy journey, as she says she wants to “help raise awareness” and “hopefully get others checking.”

The 32 year old was diagnosed with stage three breast cancer in May 2023 and initially underwent a single mastectomy.

However, she’s now shared that she has to undergo chemotherapy after doctors discovered “another type of cancer”.

Amy described the news as a “massive blow” and that it “wasn’t in the plan.”

The dancer has since decided she wants to be totally open about her fight against cancer, and shared a series of candid snaps and clips from her first day of chemotherapy.

The star smiled for a quick selfie as she laid in her hospital bed, with a plaster clearly visible on one of her arms.

In the caption, Amy wrote: “I’ve decided I want to share my chemo journey to help raise awareness, hopefully get others checking and for understanding what we go through. Port fitted! Wasn’t looking forward to it. Wasn’t easy… my veins! Feeling tender, bruised and sore but the port will help massively over the next few weeks and allow me to dance when I feel well enough.”

She went on to explain that a port “sits under the skin and the tube goes along my vein to the heart giving safe access to chemo” before jokingly adding that, while this is her understanding, she’s “no dr!”

Amy also warned “squeamish” fans that they might not want to have a look at some of the videos posted.

The brave post was flooded with supportive comments from celeb pals and fans alike.

Fellow Strictly pro dancer Gorka Marquez wrote “you got this Amy” while Motsi Mabuse said: “thinking of you. Sending love and I am very sure you are inspiring and giving courage to everyone.”

Some of Amy’s followers shared their own experiences battling cancer, and urged her to stay strong.

“I’ve had a port for 15 years! Don’t worry, they’re fine and so manageable,” one fan wrote in the comments section, while another said: “you will get through, lovely lady. So good for you to share for you as well as others because unless you’ve been that person you can’t hope to understand.”

Amy has said that she’ll be missing from this year’s Strictly Come Dancing line-up due to her treatment, leading to a flood of support and love from both her co-stars and fans of the series, who hope to see her well and dancing soon.
