‘I took the call in a scuzzy car park!’: The Crown’s Meg Bellamy details how she was working at LEGOLAND when she nabbed Kate Middleton role with zero acting experience

The Crown star Meg Bellamy has detailed how she was working at Legoland when she discovered she’s landed the coveted role as a teenage Kate Middleton. 

The actress, 20, who portrays the Princess of Wales in the final season of the hit Netflix show, had zero acting experience and was working as a mascot at the Windsor attraction when she discovered she scooped the part. 

Speaking to The Sunday Times, she detailed the inopportune moment she received the call from the producer: ‘I felt my phone ringing in my pocket and knew it was Kate [Bone] because I’d been expecting her call for days…

‘But I couldn’t answer it because I was working at Legoland, in character! Eventually I got out of my costume and rushed to the delivery parking lot, which is quite scuzzy, all the delivery lorries are beeping and reversing in, to phone her back…

‘And I’m on the kerb, trying to hear her. It was not glamorous. Then I had to go back into Legoland and deal with customer complaints like nothing had happened.’

Meg’s story is fairytale like in itself, given she had no acting experience when she scooped the role in the wildly successful show.  

Upon seeing a tweet on The Crown’s official Twitter account calling for actresses to apply to play the university-aged future Queen, Meg decided to go ahead to apply – by filming her own audition tape to send to producers. 

She said: ”I’d loved watching the show, so when the casting call came out, applying was a no-brainer. Watching it, I never thought I’d be in it one day. I never knew how present they would go, so I didn’t know Kate Middleton would be an option.’ 

Meg previously revealed her neighbour convinced her to audition for The Crown and insisted she still doesn’t think she resembles Kate.

Although Meg’s neighbour was adamant that she looked just like the Princess of Wales, the actress said she had never been compared to Kate before.

She added: ‘I never got that and I still think maybe I don’t, but with the amazing hair and make-up teams and the costume department, once everything’s put together, you have to have an essence.’

Opening up about the audition process, Meg, who stars opposite Prince William actor Ed McVey, revealed that she had to tell producers her height to begin with.

She also said the casting team also asked her to reveal a fun fact about themselves – with Meg opting to tell them about her job at the popular theme park.

During the process, Meg said she tried to ‘unleash her inner make-up artist’ and carefully studied Netflix’s photo of Kate to figure out how the future Princess had applied her bronzer.

She continued: ‘With every audition, I just watched and watched [Kate]. Reading about her and listening to her was so important both before and during.’

Although the costume department had pictures of the Kate to base Meg’s wardrobe on, the actress highlighted how there are no videos of the royal speaking as a student – meaning some of her mannerisms where left to Meg’s interpretation.

While Meg has no official acting credits to her name, Ed has significantly more experience; he graduated from Drama Centre London in 2021 and was an understudy in the play Camp Siegfried, which was shown at London’s Old Vic.

Meg has never acted professionally before and applied for the role after earning an A* for drama in her A-levels at St Crispin’s School in Wokingham, Berkshire.

On her affinity with the royal after playing the role, Meg said: ‘Stepping into Kate’s shoes made me really fond of her. Every day I researched her I felt a closeness with her. She was very sporty, and I played netball like her…

‘Growing up in a non-royal background and falling in love [with William], there’s a nice simplicity to it. She’s so approachable and so self-assured, classy and emotionally intelligent. I really admire that about her.”
