Prince William andPrincess Kate’s US tour success knockedHarry andMeghan’sNetflix documentary into “second place”, aroyal expert has claimed.
Speaking exclusively to OK! magazine, Jennie Bond said she believed the Prince and Princess of Wales’trip to Boston for theEarthshot Prize ceremony was bigger news Stateside than the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s six-part docuseries.
The former BBC royal correspondent said she believed the understated nature of William and Kate’s trip to the US was a "snub" to the outlandish way Harry, 38, and Meghan, 41, travelled to theRipple of Hope awards ceremony in New York a few days later.
The Prince and Princess of Wales, both 40, visited Boston early in December for the Earthshot awards – created by William in 2020 to celebrate people for their outstanding contributions to environmentalism.
The first three episodes of the Harry & Meghan showlanded on Netflix a few days later – on Thursday 8 December. The second volume of the show is set to air this Thursday, 15 December.
Ms Bond, speaking exclusively to OK!, said: “I don't believe Harry and Meghan's documentary shadowed things in the States, as the biggest news over there was William and Catherine's visit.
“They never went into so much detail about Harry and Meghan, so it kind of knocked them into second place.”
Ms Bond added that, in spite of the controversy surrounding his brother’s documentary, William had “soldiered on in a grown up way by getting on with the job of the tour”.
She said: "They’ve put their heads down, got on with things and rose above all of the hoo-ha.
"Earthshot is a great success – it’s very laudable and slick and is very successful in shining light on projects all around the world.
“But they’ve also sort of snubbed Harry and Meghan with how under-played they carried out the tour in terms of extravagance.
“You had the recycled clothes, the recycled red carpet, the hired frock for £74 and I believe it to be true that William and Catherine came back overnight on a British Airways scheduled flight.
“They weren’t on aprivate jet swanning in from California to New York as Harry and Meghan did a few days later.
“I think the more you look at William and Catherine, the more full of integrity they are.”
In the latest bombshell trailer for the Sussexes’ Netflix documentary, Harry appeared to take a swipe at William and The Firm – accusing the monarchy of “institutional gaslighting”.
He told the camera that "they were happy to lie to protect my brother" but "were never willing to tell the truth to protect us".
Ms Bond said she believed the trailer would have left the Royal Family feeling"despairing, dismayed and disappointed".
She also claimed the decision to include a clip of Diana's Panorama interview in the Netflix series was“blatantly, openly and pointedly hurtful” to Prince William.
Ms Bond also said she believed King Charles, 74, would not directly respond to the show unless there is a“direct hit” on 75 year oldCamilla, Queen Consort.
