Princess Diana was considered a royal fashionista, and she took big and bold steps into the world of high style in her later years. While navigating her own approach to royal dressing, the Duchess of Cambridge has carved out a quintessentially ‘Kate’ style for herself, but she has often been spotted wearing outfits similar to those worn by her late mother-in-law over the years.

Princess Diana’s engagement was announced in 1981 alongside a sweet photo of her and Prince Charles. To match her sapphire engagement ring, Diana wore a navy suit for the photocall, and Kate paid her homage to Diana with her engagement announcement in 2010 by also wearing navy.

For the Platinum Jubilee edition of the monarch’s birthday parade, Kate wore a similar outfit her late mother-in-law had worn 30 years prior, but she picked a blue hat rather than a black one like Diana had worn.
