The royal carol service took place in Westminster Abbey on Thursday night, and Queen Camilla attended wearing a very beautiful and interesting brooch. Hosted by Kate Middleton, the annual service recognises the selfless efforts of individuals, families and communities across the UK.
It intends to celebrate and showcase the joy that human connection and togetherness can bring.
The Carol Service is the second that the Princess of Wales has held and it was dedicated to the late Queen Elizabeth II and the values she demonstrated throughout her life.
Fine jewellery experts at UK retailer Steven Stone have taken a close look at the breathtaking piece Camilla had on display, which once belonged to the Queen Mother.
Diamond expert, Zack Stone, commented: “When the palace announced that this year’s royal carol service would be in tribute to the late Queen Elizabeth II, we knew that there’d be some sentimental jewellery at the annual event, and Camilla didn’t let us down.”
As well as wearing a stunning white coat, she carried a Launer London “Tosca Black Leather Clutch” which she could previously be seen holding on Remembrance Sunday.
Queen Elizabeth II was a huge fan of Launer London bags and even appointed them with the Royal Warrant in 1968.
But Camilla also made a nod to the Queen Mother, as well as Queen Elizabeth II.
The expert continued: “The Queen Consort opted for a flattering white coat dress that she accessorised with an art deco brooch that belonged to the Queen Mother.
“The eye-catching piece features diamonds and dark brown topazes, as well as a curving diamond-set clip fastener.”
According to Mr Stone, this brooch has a “special” meaning that is close to Queen Camilla’s heart.
He explained: “Typical of a design that you’d expect to see in the mid-1930s, the brooch clearly holds a special place in Camilla’s heart as she’s chosen to wear it as the Duchess of Cornwall and the Queen Consort.”
Queen Camilla’s brooch is “not particularly expensive” according to the jewellery expert.
Mr Stone commented: “Topaz is relatively abundant and can be found all over the world. As a result of this, it’s not particularly expensive. With this in mind, I’d estimate the piece to be worth £5,000.”
The Queen Consort owns quite a few pieces of the late Queen Mother’s jewellery collection.
One item Camilla is rarely seen without is her engagement ring from King Charles, and it’s difficult to miss the enormous diamond sparkling on her wedding finger.
The ring is one of the most extensive and expensive engagement rings in the Royal Family. When the then-Prince of Wales proposed to Camilla in 2005, he chose a ring with a special connection to the Royal Family.
He picked a five-carat emerald-cut diamond surrounded by three diamond baguettes given to the Queen Mother in 1929.
It was passed on from one generation to the Queen Mother, who was first seen wearing it in the 1980s after receiving it from King George VI.
Mr Stone added: “This brooch is not the only piece of jewellery that Camilla possesses that has a connection to the Queen Mother either.
“As well as multiple brooches that belonged to her, Camilla’s engagement ring features a five-carat emerald-cut diamond, surrounded by three diamond baguettes that were given to the Queen Mother in 1929.”
