A RETAIL worker has revealed the one item he hated selling at JD Sports – branding it a waste of money.
Matthew Mcalonan, 17, was drawn to the retailer because he thought it would be cool working there.
But because he was under 18 he only got £4.92 an hour and was forced to push a "useless" shoe protection spray.
Matthew, from Wishaw, Lanarkshire, said: “They told me the wages in the interview and that was the first red flag. My face just dropped.
“From the outside it looks like a great job. There’s a casual uniform, great music playing all the time.
“But you’ll find that the staff are only really smiling because they have to.”
Matthew was told he was hired because he was good at talking to people.
And he was forced to use that “super power” to push a £20 item.
Matthew said: “I’ve used it before. I know that it doesn’t work.
“Times are tough so forcing something that is useless but costs people up to £20 is hard.

“But if you don’t ask every customer if they want to buy it then eyebrows are going to be raised.
“Your manager will be over your shoulder asking why you’ve not done it.”
And Matthew admitted that the music, one of the biggest selling points of the job, turned into a constant nightmare.
He revealed the same handful of tracks were on a loop round the clock as he helped customers.
Matthew said: “The music was God awful. It was just the same four hip hop songs on repeat.
“It’s all this rubbish rap music. I prefer the older stuff.
“I really wanted to put my head through a wall.”
But Matthew said despite the poor wages he gave the job his all and was constantly selling.
And he revealed he has an ability which made selling things come quite easily to him.
He said: “I would smile all the time.
“You have the power to change someone’s day through that one interaction. I get a real buzz from making people happy.”
Matthew eventually jumped ship because he got a better job offer with a higher wage.
But he admitted that he doesn’t hold any grudges against his former employers.
He said: “I don’t think they’re a bad company. The people there were brilliant.
"In no way am I slating JD Sports. It’s a good vibe. I can see why people would want to work there. I’ve heard that the wages have gone up.”
Matthew also confessed that he splashes out a fortune on designer gear.
