CRUISE vacations certainly aren't for everyone, but one lawyer has very specific reasons for opting not to sail.

Carrie Jernigan, who received her JD from the University of Arkansas Law School according to her law group's website, has revealed three reasons why she will never sail on board a cruise ship.

The lawyer shared her concerns and reasoning in two viral TikTok videos.

In the first video, Carrie cites being a victim of a crime on a cruise ship as one of her main concerns.

"There's no police force, there's no governing body, there's no investigative agency that could assist you," she says.

But even if you could gain access to those resources, there's still a question of who would prosecute the case, which is one of her three points.

Often, cruise ships are under maritime law, which Carrie says is "the most outdated, antiquated, complex law that there is."

Carrie also mentions the fact that determining the location of where the crime took place in relation to the nearest cruise ship port or country is a complex undertaking.

But sometimes, when a ship is 24 nautical miles outside of any country's coast, it then falls under international waters.

In that case, the country whose flag is flown on the ship – usually belonging to the Bahamas or Panama – will govern.

This was of concern to Carrie as other countries have different laws from the United States.

Basically, the exact location of a cruise ship at any given moment changes how a possible case is handled.

Carrie then flips the scenario in her second video, talking about the situation from the perspective of someone accused of a crime on a cruise ship.

Citing many of the same points, including the questions about governance, she says: "While on a cruise, you will most likely be going through countries that do not recognize due process – at least to a level that the United States does.

"You may be in a country that does not allow you to have a jury trial if you are accused of a crime.

"You may not be afforded an attorney. You may not have the privilege of a right to remain silent.

"You may not have any of the laws that the United States affords you from the Constitution," she continues.

Carrie further states that she's not willing to put herself at risk in countries that don't have the same types of laws as the US.

Many TikTokers shared in her concerns.

"How did I never think of any of this," one TikToker commented.

"Attorneys are worst scare scenario people bc that’s what we live every day usually," Carrie responded.

"This is the kind of stuff that people think I’m crazy for worrying about yet I worry. It could happen," another person commented.

"Totally agree. The lack of protection is the reason I never wanted to go but this is good info also," someone else chimed in.

But others disagree with the lawyer's point of view.

"I have been on 4 cruises! Loved everyone, a crime can happen anyplace. I will 100% continue cruising," one TikToker wrote.
