Queen Elizabeth’s eight grandchildren took part in a vigil in the Palace of Westminster last night, September 17. Princess Eugenie, Princess Beatrice, Zara Tindall and Lady Louise joined Prince William,  Prince Harry, James, Viscount Severn and Peter Phillips beside their grandmother’s coffin for 10 minutes. 

Lady Louise Windsor, 18, joined her older cousins last night. She is the eldest child and only daughter of the Earl and Countess of Wessex, Edward and Sophie.

Louise wore black like the rest of the Royal Family, which is traditional for those in mourning after a monarch’s death.

However, the young royal donned an accessory that stood out: a silver necklace with a horse-shaped pendant. The pendant is the outline of a horse’s head. 

The necklace was an obvious tribute to Her Majesty as the late monarch loved horses and horse riding.

Louise shared her love for everything equestrian with the Queen.

As well as the horse necklace, Louise accessorised her mourning outfit with a thick, velvet headband.

All female members of the Royal Family wore headbands last night – these were Zara Tindall, Princess Beatrice, and Princess Eugenie.

The women opted for a headband instead of the more traditional hat or fascinator.

According to The Kit, headbands are “more than simply a bold reimagining of the fustiest form of royal headwear” and padded headbands are said to offer a modern alternative to “sensible” headpieces.

Headbands are not only pretty, but they are also practical as they keep hair off the face which is ideal for those royals who are prone to hair touching as a soothing ritual.

Iconic designer Simone Rocha previously told Vogue: “I like them [headbands] as they frame your face and extend your silhouette.”

Fashion director Venetia Scott has called the accessory “fuss-free” and a “foolproof” way of “adorning an outfit”.

“It’s just a detail which I forget is even there,” she remarked. “It’s funny how people pierce their ears to have more places for jewellery, but they don’t use their hair more to embellish.”

The female royals all wore headbands last night, but with different outfits.

Zara matched her Bee Smith Millinery headband with a long-sleeved coat by British luxury brand Jane Atelier, called the Opera Midi Dress in Black, which she hasn’t been seen wearing before.

Eugenie’s headband came with an extra detail: it had a subtle netted veil attached to it. Veils are a traditional part of a mourner’s outfit and offers the wearer more privacy to grieve.

The Princess opted for a Misha Nonoo coat called the Honoria – matching this with her Linda Black Suede Pumps by Gianvito Rossi.

Meanwhile, Beatrice wore the Black Tailored Crepe and Chiffon Midi Dress by Self Portrait.

Her headband was the Waterfall Bow Band from JBH Millinery.
