A WOMAN who won a competition to have her garden transformed has told how her beautiful new edible garden helps her save money on her food bill.
Nadia Stewart, from Bradford, saw her garden transformed from an “unusable, muddy patch of grass” into a calming outdoor oasis – all thanks to the latest amazing makeover on Ronseal Presents…The Great Garden Revolution.
The mum-of-two, who lives with her children Dylan and Myah and their dog George, appeared on the second series of Channel 4's hit show.
It sees designer Joel Bird, craftsman Bruce Kenneth, and horticulturalist Errol Reuben Fernandes help families across the country to reclaim their outdoor spaces with the aid of Ronseal products.
In episode two, the family's garden was given a breath-taking makeover, with new features like an edible garden, pergola-covered seating area and fold-down fence introduced to the once unloved space.
Before the project, the show’s team of DIY professionals got to work to understand what the family needed from their new garden.

Nadia explains that before the transformation, the family barely made use of the garden at all.

“There was a tiny patio, the grass was muddy, and we really just used the garden to let the dog out,” she says.
To provide a space where the family could relax and enjoy the outdoors together, the team created a whole new decking area with an outdoor table and bench seating.

They also installed a beautiful pergola with a shaded area so that Nadia’s daughter Miya can sit outside, too.
Miya has albinism and is visually impaired and photophobic, meaning that before the garden makeover, she was unable to go out in the garden for long periods due to her sensitivity to light.
“Bruce and Joel thought of everything,” says Nadia.
“The new shaded area will completely change how we can use the garden together.

"The team even thought of the smallest details – the red and green Ronseal paints that they used mean the whole space is as beautiful to Miya as it is to us.”
The pergola and outdoor seating area also adds to the ‘zen’ quality of the garden, providing a soothing place for the whole family to relax.
“Now I have a beautiful space where I can meditate and study right on my backdoor,” says Nadia.
Edible garden
Nadia loves to cook, so the team created a stunning edible garden full of ingredients that she can use when rustling up meals in her own kitchen.
Horticulturalist Errol used his green fingers to create the edible layer garden, which will also encourage wildlife, keep the garden vibrant and save some money on the weekly food shop for the Stewart family.
“I love Caribbean dishes and now I can cook with ingredients that I know are organic because they’ve come from my back door,” Nadia explains.
“Making the garden a sanctuary for wildlife makes it all the more special to me – we’ve always had birds that come back to nest and this is their home too.

"Since being on the show we’ve had hedgehogs, pheasants, and the family of birds come back to visit.
"They probably spend more time on the new decking than I do!”
Fold-down fence
Nadia’s next-door neighbour is also her best friend.
Having spent lockdown speaking to each other through the garden fence, the team came up with a great solution to help them be more sociable.
Bruce adapted the fence to create a flip-down panel that can be used as an outdoor table between the two households whenever they want to chat or hold an outdoor gathering.
The panel easily locks back into place for privacy.

“Now we have a permanent way to open up our gardens so they feel bigger and we get to enjoy the summer together,” adds Nadia.
The fold-down fence is the perfect final touch to an amazing garden makeover that Nadia and her family can enjoy for many years to come.
