What is a babymoon? Best babymoon destinations and how to plan one | The Sun

PREGNANT women often have babymoon's in order to have a break before welcoming their child into the world.

But what is a babymoon and how long does one last? This is all you need to know.

What is a babymoon?

A babymoon is a celebratory vacation, like a honeymoon but instead celebrating the impending birth of a child.

It is seen as a last hurrah for the mother before welcoming her child into the world.

The term was coined by British author and childbirth educator Sheila Kitzinger.

Originally, it was defined as the period of time after a baby's birth that the family spends alone together to facilitate bonding between parents and baby.

When should you go on a babymoon?

There are no set rules on when you should take a holiday during pregnancy, but it is advised that the romantic break is taken when you are feeling well so you can enjoy the experience.

Morning sickness during the first trimester would be a reason to wait until the second trimester, as it should be an enjoyable experience, which is unlikely if you're sick.

It is suggested that you should take a babymoon between 14 and 28 weeks, as the sickness will have gone and the woman will have more energy.

It’s also a good idea to plan a babymoon before the third trimester, when you’re likely to feel more tired and uncomfortable.

Plus, there’s always the risk of an early delivery or restricted travel, which would spoil any further holiday plans.

How long is a babymoon?

A babymoon is typically around two to four nights long, however, this isn't set in stone and is up to you.

It is best to check with a doctor before travelling if there are any problems during the pregnancy.

Best babymoon destinations

According to Club Med, a city break to Paris is the top babymoon destination, most likely for its couple-friendly restaurants and general romance levels.

This may also be a top suggestion because of the fact it isn't too far to travel, as a long haul flight may be too uncomfortable during a pregnancy.

Other ideas for destinations include the Maldives, as it is a relaxing destination with a manageable flight time of three to four hours.
