Penny, a seven-year-old Shih Tzu who has restricted vision, and her best friend Sandy, a 10-year-old Jack Russell who acts as her guide, were in a poor state when they were rescued by the RSPCA. But the bonded pair have “flourished” in the care of the charity’s Cornwall branch in Saint Columb.
Penny and Sandy are now searching for a forever home where they won’t be parted.
Sammy Howard, from RSPCA Cornwall, said: “Penny and Sandy were in poor health when they were rescued by our animal welfare officer.
“They’ve really flourished since being with us but can find new people and new situations a little daunting so are looking for a special and patient home with owners who can help build their confidence and introduce them slowly to all the new sights and sounds in the world.
“Penny is such a sweetheart and is more confident than her pal, even though she has restricted vision.
“She doesn’t let this hold her back and has a real zest for life.
“Sandy is her favourite friend and acts almost like a guide dog, helping Penny get around.
“Penny is never far from her pal’s side.
“When they first arrived with us, Sandy was incredibly anxious and wouldn’t let anyone touch her.
“After about a week we managed, slowly, to gain her trust and she’s really started to come out of her shell.
“As Penny is so sociable, she helps Sandy with her confidence.”
The duo are looking for a quiet home with no other pets, although they could live with older children.
Ms Howard added: “When these sweet dogs know you they are so affectionate and will give you lots of love and kisses you could possibly want.
“They’ll make such wonderful pets and companions, we just need to find them the right home.”
