A bride-to-be has revealed that she demoted her maid of honor to a bridesmaid because she has a fear of public speaking and didn’t want to give a speech at her wedding.
Reddit user u/yeahbirdie has been branded the villain in her own story after she took to the ‘Am I the A**hole’ forum to explain the situation, asking if she was in the wrong for replacing her maid of honor over a speech.
‘I am getting married next month. My fiancé and I were expecting speeches from the best man, maid of honor, and our fathers/mothers,’ she wrote, noting that she told her friend six months in advance that she would have to give a speech.
Yikes: A woman has been branded a ‘bridezilla’ after revealing on Reddit she demoted her maid of honor because she has a fear of public speaking and didn’t want to make a wedding speech
Not right: The bride-to-be received backlash from other users who scolded her for making a wedding speech more important than her relationship with her former maid of honor
‘Just last week, she came forward and said she has had bad anxiety giving speeches, to the point of panic, and didn’t want to give a speech at my wedding,’ the bride continued.
‘So I told her that the speech is really important to me, and I would be choosing another bridesmaid to be the maid of honor. Well…she was clearly upset but just said “ok…” and that was it.’
The woman stressed that the speeches mean a lot to her, and she was looking forward to hearing them on her big day.
‘On top of that, I just think it would be uncomfortable if the best man was giving a speech, and then the maid of honor never spoke,’ she added. ‘People would be wondering, ‘Why isn’t she giving a speech too?”‘
If the bride was looking for sympathy in the comments, she didn’t get it. Other Reddit users slammed her, branding her ‘narcissistic’ and a ‘bridezilla.’
‘Your maid of honor is supposed to be your best friend. You basically tossed her aside due to her fear of public speaking,’ one person wrote. ‘You are an awful friend. You could have asked another bridesmaid to make the speech instead.’
‘I wonder what your wedding is truly about? Is it to gather with friends and family as you and your spouse begin your life together? Or is it to hear folks talk about how wonderful you are?’ someone else asked.
Another noted: ‘You didn’t want a maid of honor. You wanted a performer.’
The original poster returned with an edit after receiving ‘pretty overwhelming’ backlash, saying she did ‘feel quite guilty.’ However, she made it clear that her former maid of honor was going to stay demoted.
‘I am still making sure to include the previous chosen maid of honor as a bridesmaid and I will be talking with her to make sure she’s still okay in that roll [sic],’ she wrote.
‘I’m also trying to be very understanding of her anxiety issues, but it’s just been extremely difficult for me to choose a maid of honor and see this whole thing through,’ she added. ‘I’ve been extremely stressed from my kids and work, so having this additional stressor made things much more challenging for me.’
Many commenters thought the edit made her sound worse, with one person commenting: ‘This bride is completely tone deaf and narcissistic. Even her edit misses the mark completely and she’s STILL making it all about her. This isn’t your coronation, it’s your wedding.’
