Designer Misha Nonoo reveals how a ‘serendipitous’ meeting with a stranger in a New York cafe a kickstarted her career – and now she dresses stars including BFF Meghan

The Duchess of Sussex’s close friend Misha Nonoo has revealed how a chance encounter in a cafe helped kickstart her career as a fashion designer. 

Misha, who was born to a British mother and Iraqi father and raised in Bahrain, explained she was stopped by a stranger while wearing one of her designs at brunch with friends in New York City.  

‘She complimented me on my jacket,’ Misha said in an interview with Tatler. ‘I told her it was my own design and we started talking about how a jacket can make or break an outfit.

‘Unbeknown to me, she was a buyer at the boutique department store Intermix. The next thing I knew my whole collection had been bought and was being sold in their shops.’

Misha Nonoo designs were soon stocked in retailers including Bergdorf Goodman and Neiman Marcus but after five years she found herself falling out of love with the wholesale model.

‘Seeing my clothes in stores never felt quite right,’ Misha told the magazine. ‘My designs didn’t fit with all the others on display and were stronger when they stood alone.’ 

Selling bespoke pieces to individual customers offered her an opportunity to achieve this vision for the brand – as well as improve the label’s sustainability. 

Now she makes each piece only when it is ordered, eliminating unnecessary waste.

Misha became close friends with Meghan, 37, after they were reportedly introduced by a mutual friend in Miami.

The pair remained close even after Meghan met Harry and the designer was among the star-studded congregation who watched the couple tie the knot at Windsor Castle in May last year. 

In a show of their friendship Meghan wore the Misha Nonoo ‘Husband’ shirt for her first public outing with Prince Harry at the Invictus Games in Toronto in September 2017.  

Photos of the couple went around the world and so too did Misha’s brand.  

The Duchess, who is expecting her first child this spring, once again chose Misha’s label for the launch of her Grenfell Tower charity cookbook, Together, at Kensington Palace in September last year.  

Misha’s designs have also been seen on stars including Emma Watson and Ellie Goulding, a close friend of the royal family.
