A clip is breaking hearts in TikTok after documenting the suffering of a pup who was left to fend for himself after sustaining life-threatening injuries.

The disturbing case was documented in a viral TikTok video by @petfamilyrescue which garnered attention from more than 288,000 concerned viewers.

The photographic compilation shows the dog, later named Marco, “covered in bite marks” that were “beyond infected” on the day rescuers found him tied to a fence.

Though the clip fails to disclose the exact whereabouts of the dog, it claims he was found near someone’s backyard suffering from early stages of septicemia.

Marco’s wounds, which left his head completely deformed, were a dire reflection of the abuse he’d endured.

With time, however, the pup’s resilient spirit pushed through and his appetite slowly returned, although rescuers were acutely aware he was “not out of the woods yet”.

They wrote in the clip: “The next couple of days [were] still critical for him and we hope he continues to improve. He [was] on antibiotics and his body is fighting the infection.”

Doctors had to wait nearly a week before they could finally drain and clean Marco’s wounds, which were covering several parts of his body.

“He has so many deep pockets of infection in his head and legs that he needed to have several drains inserted,” the video creators explained.

Unfortunately, Marco’s journey wasn’t without setbacks, as two weeks after his rescue doctors decided he needed surgery on his leg and medical further attention for his abscesses due to returned swelling.

Fortunately, things took a turn for the better once Marco had his bandages changed, at which point rescuers spotted a glimmer of hope in the pup’s eyes.

His carers knew he’d turned a corner once he was officially adopted by his new family and introduced to his forever home, looking like a whole new dog.

Appalled by the severity of Marco’s injuries, viewers rushed to the comments to extend their support to the dog and his rescuers.

“Marco so sorry for what you had to go through,” wrote one person. “Stand tall my friend your new family will treat you right.”

A second viewer quipped: “Beyond my imagination that people could be so cruel… so glad he is doing so well and it so loved.”

“The fact [that Marco learned to trust again shows what special humans you are,” pointed out a third person.
