Everything you need to know about non-surgical profile balancing with filler

Many of us will admit to thinking about turning to filler in a bid to get the facial features we desire, but the thought of coming out of a clinic looking puffy and overly ‘done’ is also enough to make plenty of us reconsider.

Thanks to social media and over-the-top TikTok trends like butterfly lips, filler often takes a bashing. However, when injected at the right points and administered in the right amount, it can help transform your facial features and boost your confidence. Enter, profile balancing.

This surgery-free, needle-based treatment works to give your face a more balanced and contoured appearance with expertly placed filler. What’s more, the tailored approach to the treatment makes it perfect for those who don’t quite know where to start with filler.

The low-down on profile balancing

“The concept is less about injecting filler in just one area and more about looking at the face as a whole,” explains Dr Janine Rothburn, cosmetic doctor at London’sInjectual Clinic. “A lot of the time when we look at ourselves in the mirror, we only see one straight-on angle. What we can do is look at a client from a variety of angles and assess the skeletal pattern to determine how best to balance features.

“Essentially, the treatment combines a series of small tweakments made to a few areas of the face – this could be the lips, jawline, chin, cheekbones and nose – to help improve symmetry and balance facial proportions.”

After a cosmetic expert assesses your profile, small amounts of filler will be injected into a combination of the above areas in a bid to get your face closer to a ‘perfect’ ratio.

Put to the test

OK!’s deputy style director Zoe switched out her usual lip filler in favour of profile balancing injections

For years I headed to various cosmetic clinics to get my annual top-up of lip and chin filler, but did I ever take the time to think about whether filling those areas was what my face really needed? No, I didn’t. That is until I visited Injectual last month – an advanced injectables studio with an edit of cosmetic experts – and spoke to Dr Rothburn about what I actually wanted out of my appointment.

I explained that I’d had filler in those two areas for years, and after she assessed my face – on my request – she informed me that if it was symmetry I was after, I might consider skipping the lip filler and turning my attention more towards my jawline. What was meant to be a lip filler appointment turned into a profile-balancing one – and I’ll be booking it for all future appointments.

It turns out that my lips don’t need more projection and, in fact, if I added more volume to them it would throw my chin out of balance. As Dr Rothburn injected small amounts of filler into my chin, jawline and the centre of only my lower lip (only a tiny bit), she explained how the most minor tweaks to the right areas can transform the face without making it appear like I’ve had anything done.

True to her word I left the clinic looking refreshed, contoured and confident. I headed to dinner that night – because there’s next to no downtime with filler – and my friends immediately asked what skincare I was using or if I’d done my make-up differently. A few days later, after the small amount of bruising had faded from around the injection points, I was able to see the full results – and I loved them.

I’m giving profile balancing a solid 10/10.

Profile balancing at Injectual costs from £375 with an additional 1ml priced at £275. The clinic is also offering £100 off your first treatment over £300. Book here.
