Experts reveal how much you should wash your face

Are YOU washing your face enough? As Cameron Diaz confesses she ‘never’ cleans her skin, experts reveal how lax habits could lead to wrinkles, acne and even EYE infections

Experts have warned dodging a daily face wash could lead to deepening wrinkles, acne and even eye infections after Cameron Diaz confessed to having lax washing habits.

After The Holiday actress left the glitz and glamour of celebrity life nearly a decade ago, she also ditched societal beauty standards.

The 49-year-old recently revealed that she rarely thinks about her appearance anymore and ‘never’ washes her face – despite owning a ‘billion’ personal care products.

Diaz opened up about how freeing her life is now that she is out of the limelight in a new interview with RuPaul’s Drag Race star Michelle Visage on her new BBC podcast Rule Breakers.   

‘It’s hard not to, it’s hard not to look at yourself and judge yourself against other markers of beauty, and I think that that’s one of the biggest things, the last eight years girl – I’m like wild, I’m like a wild animal, I’m a beast.’

‘I don’t care,’ Cameron quipped. ‘Literally the last thing I think about on a daily basis … like maybe not at all during the day, is what I look like.

‘No, no, I literally do nothing. I like never wash my face,’ she continued, adding that she has ‘a billion products’ basically collecting dust on the shelves.

‘Twice a month if I’m lucky, I’ll be like ‘Oh, I better put this on. One time works, right?’ Like is that all I have to do? I’m just not in that place right now like where I put any energy,’ Cameron revealed. 

However experts told FEMAIL that avoiding the face wash could lead to serious health issues which damage your skin permanently.

Karl Kristian, the founder and skincare expert of health and beauty brand New Nordic, explained: ‘If you don’t wash your face every day it isn’t the end of the world as immediate damage won’t be caused, but you should not get into a habit of doing this as it will have a harmful effect on your skin. 

‘Washing your face prevents the build up of oil and bacteria so not doing this could leave you with an acne breakout and more prominent pores as the oil and dirt starts to build up due to the lack of hydration.’

Dr Ross Perry Medical Director of Cosmedics skin clinics added: ‘Even skin which isn’t prone to spots and blackheads, not washing means that pores will become clogged and lead to acne breakouts.

How having the right amount of product could be as essential as the type of beauty regime you’re doing 

Dr Tahir said: ‘Some might be used to taking a break from make-up.

‘But when it comes to your skin care routine, with all the scrubs, face masks, and moisturizers, the benefits of not using them for a while might be less obvious. 

‘You might be afraid your skin won`t look as fresh, or that there`ll be an acne breakout. 

‘Don’t worry — it`s actually healthy to let your skin breathe and rest. 

‘Without skincare products on, more oxygen will be able to get to your skin, which will help it regenerate elastin and collagen.

‘Our skin also produces a substance called sebum. 

‘And while it might make your skin look oily, there are also some positive aspects to it. 

‘Sebum acts as a barrier against microorganisms and helps keep your skin moisturized. 

‘So it’s good to let your skin do its job on its own every once in a while, without having an extra layer of some product on it.’

‘Spots which can start off quite small, continually piling on bacteria can make them worse and larger in appearance and can then take longer to disappear and in worse cases leave a scar.’

Meanwhile Ksenia Sobchak, Dermatologist at said ‘greasy and powdery accumulation’ can cause ‘eczema or rosacea’. 

She added: ‘Generally, not washing your face can result in oil and dirt buildup that cause inflammation, more prominent pores, and acne.’ 

And Dr Osman Bashir Tahir (aka Dr OBT). Aesthetic Doctor and founder ono Halcyon Aesthetics agreed, saying: ‘ If you don’t wash your face at least once a day, your skin is in danger of breakouts due to oil, dirt and makeup clogging the pores.

‘Your pores will appear larger and your skin will look dull and textured, instead of having a radiant, youthful glow. 

‘This buildup can potentially clog the pores resulting in dry, irritated skin, and even acne.’


And it isn’t just acne that you need to be careful of if you aren’t washing your face every day.  

Several of the experts warned that ditching the face wash could lead to both skin and eye infections.  

Kristian explained: ‘An effect of this is skin feeling dry and itchy which leads people to scratch and could cause more break outs, which make you more prone to infections and nobody wants that.’

Meanwhile Ksenia agreed, saying: ‘People that apply eye makeup and avoid face washing risk eye infection because the moisture in these eye products is a good breeding environment for bacteria.’

And dermatologist Dr Sonia for Faace explained: ‘If you don’t really wash your face daily, this could cause build-up of oil and dirt that may make you more prone to fungal or sometimes even bacterial overgrowth (over the long term), more prominent pores, and sometimes even inflammation.’ 


Meanwhile beauty experts also warned that those who, like Cameron, have decided not to pay much attention to beauty standards should be wary of earlier signs of aging.  

Dr Perry said Brits should be ‘washing or cleansing the skin twice a day.’

He said: ‘Firstly, even if you don’t wear make-up during the day, the bacteria which builds up over the course of the day needs to be washed away and not left sitting on the skin. 

‘Left alone, even the most perfect looking skin will become lacklustre and prone to looking dull and congested. 

‘Overnight, the skin then struggles to renew itself which will accelerate premature ageing.

‘Environmental damage such as toxins from pollution will also just build up and result in premature ageing in the form of fine lines, dry, patchy and uneven skin tone.


And it’s not just about remembering to wash your face daily, according to Dr Perry, who warned against forgetting other parts of your skin care routine.  

He said: ‘If you’re not washing the skin then the chances are you’re not moisturising either, again this will just lead to dehydrated dry looking skin which will in turn speed up the ageing process.

Why washing you TOO MUCH might also be damaging your skin 

Dr Qian Xu, founder and medical director of Skin Aesthetics explained: ‘Washing your face too much can do more harm than good, often leading to dry, irritated skin that is vulnerable to breakouts and infections. 

‘Washing with a gentle face wash will help to unclog pores and dissolve the residue that has built up over the course of the day. 

‘The main thing is not to overdo the cleaning because it will make your skin dry and will cause the oil glands in the skin to produce extra sebum. 

‘To keep the skin’s natural barrier unharmed and glowing, I recommend using a simple, non-exfoliating face wash morning and evening.

‘One thing to note is that facial wipes are actually not designed to cleanse your skin and should not be used as your primary method of makeup removal. 

‘The chemicals in them to keep them moist also coat your skin so will gradually block your pores. These wipes are handy for emergencies only.’ 

Meanwhile Hussain Abdeh, Clinical Director and Superintendent Pharmacist at Medicine Direct agreed.

He explained: ‘Washing your face with soap and cleansers strips the skin of many natural oils that it needs to stay hydrated and youthful looking.

‘Washing it too much can hinder your skin’s barrier function. 

‘Your skin works through the night to create a natural barrier against harmful bacteria and other substances that can damage it.

‘If you wash this off every morning, it means the skin will spend much of the day trying to rebuild a barrier that was already in place.

‘It is recommended that you wash your face at least once a day, ideally at night, to wash off the dirt and bacteria that your skin has collected throughout the day. 

‘This is especially true if you suffer from dry or sensitive skin; over-washing can seriously dry out the skin and leave it feeling rough and irritated.

‘Therefore, skipping the morning face wash may help to keep the skin hydrated and smooth’.’
