Fear of heights is out of control even when I'm on flat ground – it is taking over my life | The Sun

DEAR DEIDRE: I HAVE a fear of heights, even when walking on flat ground.

Ever since struggling to come down a climbing frame as a young child, I can remember suffering with vertigo.

But this condition has become worse over time.

In the last few months, I’ve had to hold on to my husband’s arm when walking across wide open spaces. I am sure he thinks I’m putting it on.

I am a very young 69-year-old and my husband is 71.

My vertigo is becoming really debilitating and I don’t want it to take over my life any more than it already has.

What can I do?

DEIDRE SAYS: It’s good that you are aware your vertigo is starting to control your life.

But as this is the case, it is definitely worth looking into getting treatment.

Please start with your GP to investigate any medical causes – some health conditions can cause balance issues which can lead to a feeling of vertigo.

Also, consider cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) which is an effective treatment for many phobias.

I’m sending you support pack about counselling.
