All eyes were on the Princess of Wales last night as she arrived at the BAFTAs in a stunning white Alexander McQueen gown and vampy black velvet gloves.

But it wasn’t just her show-stopping ensemble that had been planned to perfection – as the mother-of-three’s makeup and hair looked equally as flawless.

According to makeup artist Laura Kay, it’s clear the royal, 41, wanted to make a bold beauty impression to mark her first BAFTAs since inheriting her new title.

Speaking to FEMAIL, the expert said Kate’s team made sure she oozed ‘old Hollywood glamour’ to attend one of the glitziest nights in the acting calendar.

She explained: ‘[It was Kate’s] first time at the BAFTA’s since becoming The Princess of Wales and she looked more regal than ever.

The Princess of Wales, 41, looked sensational in a white Alexander McQueen dress, ZARA earrings and black gloves as she arrived at the BAFTAs last night

Describing how Kate’s £18 cascading Zara earrings and gloves made a ‘big impact’, Laura explained: ‘Her natural makeup glowed but I am surprised she opted for such defined eye makeup and brows.

‘She looks flawless but normally we wouldn’t see her dramatize both her attire and makeup at once, so I think she is definitely doing so strategically.’

Whereas the Princess usually opts for more natural makeup looks, Laura noted how Kate’s artist used multiple approaches to draw attention to the Princess’ eyes.

She continued: ‘Her smoky eye makeup really stands out and she has used a few techniques to achieve her desired look including a pencil or liquid liner to flick outwards to widen her eyes.

‘She has applied a deep metallic ash hue on her eyelids and blended it with a soft brown around her upper eyes to achieve an instant sultry look. She has also used eye shadow to further exaggerate her cat flick.’

To create a more glamorous, old Hollywood feel, Laura noted how the Princess’ eyebrows were also slighter darker than usual.

Laura said: ‘Her brows look more arched than normal and great attention has been made to define each hair stroke to perfection, likely using a good quality brow tool in a slightly darker shade than normal.’

What’s more, Kate’s makeup artist finished off the Princess’ complexion with some rose gold highlighter – which expertly offset her earrings and gave a more ‘youthful’ finish.

Drawing attention to Kate’s heavier eye makeup, the expert said: ‘She has used eye shadow to further exaggerate her cat flick.’

Laura Kay said the Princess’ rose gold highlighter added a ‘youthful’ glow to her overall look for the evening

Laura added: ‘There is a hint of shimmer around her brows and cheekbones and she has applied a rose liquid highlighter on her cheeks to appear crisp and youthful in appearance.

‘Kate finishes her look with peachy pink gloss. She looks happy and confident.’

Although the Princess of Wales is famous for her signature bouncy blow dries, hair stylist and trend forecaster Tom Smith noted how her team made a couple of tweaks.

The expert said: ‘Kate has opted for her staple, wavy hair which looks more glossy than usual. She has lifted the roots slightly to compliment the evening attire and adds a sophisticated and glamorous appeal.

‘She has also tucked her hair behind her ears and out of her face which is strategic because it helps show off her earrings and refrains her from smudging her makeup.

Commenting on the overall face of makeup, Laura Kay said of the Princess of Wales: ‘She looks happy and confident.’

Hair stylist Tom Smith said: ‘This colour helps give her locks a glossy healthy shine which also compliments her gold earrings perfectly.’

What is ‘expensive brunette’?

Tom Smith, hairstylist and European creative director for Evo Hair who coined the term ‘expensive brunette’, told Femail that darker tresses are all about achieving ‘deeper hair energy, dimension and detail’.

As for the reason that so many A-listers are choosing the look, he says that now brunette tresses can look equally as ‘expensive’ and ‘designed’ as icy blondes ‘it makes sense that many celebrities are interested in the deeper tones.’

Like the Princess of Wales’ BAFTA look, ‘expensive brunettes’ are enhanced with lighter tones to avoid one overall dull colour.

What’s more, Tom said Kate also appears to have hopped on the ‘expensive brunette’ trend – where stars such as Hailey Bieber, Gigi Hadid and Margot Robbie have opted for darker, deeper colour locks in recent years.

Tom continued: ‘Kate’s hair colour looks aptly similar to one of the biggest hair trends around known as “Expensive Brunette”.

‘This colour helps give her locks a glossy healthy shine which also compliments her gold earrings perfectly.

‘In addition, a middle parting adds an element of symmetry that balances the asymmetric detail of her gown.’

The royal mother-of-three opted for an Alexander McQueen one shoulder gown for the occasion, which she first wore to the event in 2019.

However it was her cascading gold earrings which added a touch of glamour to the outfit, and cost less than £20 from the high street shop.

Kate, who is known for her love of high street brands, regularly wears pieces from Zara, and mixes affordable labels with designer pieces.
