How to easily colour your hair a ‘pumpkin spice’ copper or auburn at home from £6

If you’ve scrolled through Instagram or TikTok this month, you’ve likely noticed red hair is having something of a resurgence. Blondes are ditching their summer hues for “cosy” autumnal coppers and burnt oranges which they claim work way better with their skin tones.

Brunettes are getting in on the action with auburn tints and dark copper glosses, applied as semi-permanent formulas to add warmth to their base shade.

“Reflecting the warm hues of pumpkin spiced lattes and autumn leaves, it’s no wonder salons are seeing an influx of requests for auburn and rust shades,” explains Tyler Moore, expert stylist at Live True London.

“There are so many different ways to do copper and auburn hair, from an allover colour to a more subtle auburn balayage. It’s a look you can really make your own.”

As for the maintenance involved with the colour: “Red tones can be more high maintenance than other colours as they can fade quickly. This can be prevented by washing the hair less and/or introducing copper toned hair masks to keep the colour fresh,” adds Tyler.

And if you’re wondering whether your skin tone will suit a warmer tone, the answer is likely yes. “Auburns and coppers look good on a variety of skin tones – the shade can be adjusted to look stunning on any complexion,” Tyler says.

If you want the perfect shade to suit your skin tone, you can head to a hair salon to have an expert advise on the colour. However, if you’re keen to give a rusty red or a cool copper a go at home, there are plenty of semi-permanent glosses and colourants on the market that can give you a warmer look without much fuss or cost.
