Reed diffusers are an affordable, flame-free way to add a gorgeous scent to your home. You don’t need to like diffusers, so they’re safer to use than candles and you don’t need to worry about leaving them unattended. Reed diffusers can cost anywhere from £2 to £200 and upwards, and if you’re replacing them every couple of months, like you’re supposed to do, this can add up to quite a large amount. Express.co.uk chatted to the experts at crafts supplier Cosy Owl to find out how to make your own reed diffusers for a fraction of the price.
Reed diffusers fill your home with a scent without using any heat, unlike a candle.
They’re effortless to use – all you need to do is pop some reeds into a jar of diffuser oil and let them soak up the fragrance.
The reeds naturally emit the smell around the room and you need to flip them every other day to make sure the smell continues to disperse.
Diffusers add luxury to your home, and they’re really fun to make. Richard Fewings, Managing Director of Cosy Owl commented: “A crafty way of adding colour to your key feature rooms is by using this clever reed diffuser colouring technique. It’s certainly a funky way to add something different to your home!”

How to make your own reed diffuser
You only need seven items to make our own reed diffuser, and you might have some of them at home already.
If you already have a fancy reed diffuser you bought from the shop that has run out, wash out the bottle and use it again.
This rules out the need to buy a new glass container and diffuser cap.
- 200ml Glass Container
- 160ml Augeo Reed Diffuser Base Oil
- 40ml Fragrance Oil
- Mica Powder
- Glass Marble Balls

Using a funnel, add 160ml of reed diffuser base oil into your container.
Then, add 40ml of your chosen fragrance oil – it should be an 80/20 base oil to fragrance ratio.
Add around 15 glass marble balls into your container – these will make the mica powder shimmer once added.
Give it a shake to mix the ingredients together.
Add in your coloured mica powder – add as much or little, depending on the desired effect you want to achieve.
Shake it again to mix it all together thoroughly and create an even smell.
Add your diffuser cap and place your reeds into the container.
Flip the reeds – this way your fragrance oil will now run down the reeds!
