IKEA to launch capsule collection with Virgil Abloh

From flat-pack to fashion! IKEA set to unveil collection from Louis Vuitton designer and former protégé of Kanye West – two years after REJECTING the rapper’s offer to collaborate

  • Swedish homeware store is preparing to unveil collaboration with Virgil Abloh
  • Louis Vuitton’s head menswear designer has said that ‘IKEA is transcending’
  • Abloh will give fans a sneak peek of the collection via an Instagram live stream

First they surprised shoppers by launching a seafood-themed afternoon tea.

And now Ikea has delighted fans with news of a highbrow fashion collaboration with Louis Vuitton’s new menswear designer.

Virgil Abloh is set to launch a capsule furniture collection with the Swedish giant later this year which will include a complete redesign of the iconic blue ‘Frakta’ bag beloved by shoppers.

Off-White founder Abloh is a former protegé of rapper turned designer Kanye West, whose offer to collaborate with Ikea was famously rebuffed in 2016.

And the irony was not lost on fans, one of whom wrote on social media: ‘Didn’t Ikea reject [Yeezy]?’

Swedish superstore Ikea has delighted fans with news of a high-brow collaboration with Louis Vuitton’s new menswear designer Virgil Abloh

And this week, Ikea delighted fans by announcing a sneak peek in the form of an Instagram live stream due to be aired on April 30.

Fans were delighted by the ‘exciting’ news, hailing Abloh an inspiration – while some were worried that ‘the collab of the century’ might carry a high price tag.

In a previous statement, Abloh said: ‘We’re in a moment where IKEA is transcending, and people are bringing this “do it yourself” culture” to the blue bag.

‘What I’m most interested in is doing that process in partnership with the brand. It’s allowing me to put my opinion on a classic. It’s unique, and distinctly as much of Off-White as it’s IKEA.’

The Virgil collaboration comes after it was announced that furniture superstore’s Manchester branch announced its own version of afternoon tea with a Swedish spin, for the bargain price of £5 per head.

Abloh, founder of Off White, was recently announced as Louis Vuitton’s first ever black artistic director for menswear.

After months of speculation, the iconic French fashion house, known for its monogrammed leather handbags and suitcases, confirmed in March that he would be taking on the role of chief menswear designer.

One Instagrammer pointed out that IKEA had previously turned Kanye West’s offer down

The news was met with widespread praise online, with stars including Kim Kardashian-West and Edward Enninful OBE celebrating his appointment.

The luxury brand, owned by LVMH, will present 37-year-old Abloh’s first men’s collection in June during Men’s Fashion Week in Paris.

Abloh, the founder of streetwear label Off-White, has taken over from Kim Jones, who was recently appointed the new designer of menswear at Christian Dior, another LVMH brand.
