Inside Sarah Ferguson and Prince Andrew’s relationship

Prince Andrew may be canceled by much of the media in 2020, but when it comes to his immediate family, it’s understandably a different story. And his relationship with ex-wife Sarah Ferguson, who is mother to Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie, is more complex than friend or foe. Sarah, better known as Fergie, married Prince Andrew after a whirlwind courtship in 1986. But their love affair was somewhat brief, as the two went through a separation in 1992 and divorced in 1996 (via Hello!).

As if the separation itself didn’t rock the royal social norms, Ferguson soon became tabloid fodder with topless photos and a stolen kiss with another man (via The Washington Post). She was still legally married, after all. But while Ferguson was estranged from much of British high society, the one person who seemed to harbor no ill will was eventual ex-husband, Prince Andrew. In 2008, the two even moved back in together in the Duke of York’s Royal Lodge, where they have stayed together ever since (via Women & Home). The former couple also jointly own and reside in a chalet in Verbier, Switzerland, though it was put on the market after a lawsuit was filed against the couple (via Newsweek).

Sarah Ferguson and Prince Andrew put their daughters first

Even though they’re not together romantically, they maintain a close connection. In an interview with Daily Mail, Ferguson shared, Although we are not a couple, we really believe in each other. The Yorks are a united family. We’ve shown it … My duty is to him. I am so proud of him. I stand by him and always will. The way we are is our fairytale.” It seems the focus of Ferguson and Andrew’s relationship has always been their dedication to creating a family unit for their two girls — no matter what else was going on.

In an interview at the launch of one of her children’s books, Ferguson said: “He really is still my handsome Prince. We really believe in being good parents for our girls … It’s lovely that we are such a family and the story has a happy ending all the time” (via Hello!). In 2019, the former couple even attended the Grand Prix in Bahrain, marking their first official royal appearance together in 25 years (via Harper’s Bazaar). And in May 2020, the couple shared a group pic on Instagram, making this former couple one of the happiest divorced duos that we’ve ever seen.
