Kate Middleton Gives Birth To Baby Boy

The Duchess of Cambridge delivered an 8lb 7oz baby boy today. Kate Middleton, who arrived at St Mary’s Hospital in Paddington at 6 a.m. gave birth without complications at 11 a.m. The baby, the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh’s sixth great-grandchild, will be fifth in line for the throne after Prince Charles, Prince William, and the baby’s brother and sister, Prince George and Princess Charlotte.

Prince William, who was with Kate at the time of the birth, said mother and child were “doing well.” Royal fans immediately began celebrating outside St. Mary’s Hospital after the announcement. The rest of the royal family is expected to see the baby tomorrow at Kensington Palace.

A notice was posted outside Buckingham Palace after the birth, announcing, “Her Royal Highness the Duchess of Cambridge was safely delivered of a son at 11.01 a.m. today. Her Royal Highness and her child are both doing well.”

The baby’s sex was unknown to William and Kate during the pregnancy, He will be known as the Prince of Cambridge. Mayor of London Sadiq Khan tweeted: “On behalf of Londoners, I want to send our warmest congratulations to the Duke & Duchess of Cambridge on the birth of their baby boy,” while comedian David Walliams joked, “Prince Harry just got demoted again.”

The baby, born on St. George’s Day—St. George is the patron saint of England—shares his birthday with Lady Gabriella Windsor, daughter of Prince and Princess Michael of Kent, born on April 23, 1981. Possible names for the newborn include Arthur, Albert, Frederick, James, and Philip, as a tribute to his great-grandfather.
