From the moment Kate Middleton joined the royal family, fans have been impressed by her elegant and timeless sense of style. From luxury labels to affordable brands, the royal is known for recycling pieces from her closet and stepping out in looks fans are eager to recreate.
Needless to say, Princess Kate has had some stellar fashion moments in 2022. Using research from fashion expert Karen Millen, who analysed Google Trends data from the last year, here are Kate’s most fashionable outfits of the year.
Queen Elizabeth II's state funeral
The number one look was Kate Middleton's black coat dress by Alexander McQueen, which she wore during Queen Elizabeth II's state funeral. Searches for the term "Kate Middleton dress" rose 233% above average, making this dress Kate’s most popular of the year.
The coat dress was accessorised with the same pearls Kate wore to Prince Philip's funeral along with a veiled hat, stilettos, and pearl jewellery from the Queen's collection.
William and Kate's Caribbean tour
On the Belize leg of her and Prince William's Caribbean tour in March, Kate wore the second-most popular dress of 2022 in honour of the Queen's Platinum Jubilee.
The summer dress from American designer Tory Burch, called "Painted Roses," has a floral pattern with blue, red, and white accents that resemble the Belize flag. The dress saw searches for "Kate Middleton dress" increase 203% more above average.
Walkabout around Windsor Castle
The third most significant outfit of the year for Kate was a black Jenny Packham number, which saw a 173% increase in searches.
In September, the Princess of Wales stepped out wearing a simple black dress on a walkabout around Windsor Castle as part of a tribute to the Queen. In a beautiful yet dignified ensemble, Kate accessorised the dress with pearl earrings, black heels, and black tights.
Top Gun film premiere
The off-the-shoulder gown Kate wore at the Top Gun film premiere in London in May is the fourth most popular of her outfits of 2022.
Accessorised with black pumps, diamond-studded earrings, and an Alexander McQueen black box purse, the Princess of Wales stunned in the elegant Roland Mouret black and white evening gown.
Platinum Jubilee Pageant
Kate's fuchsia pink Stella McCartney gown she wore to the Platinum Jubilee Pageant back in June is her fifth most sought-after outfit, with searches increasing 127% over average.
The custom dress featured padded shoulders, ruching on one shoulder and puffed long sleeves. The Duchess accessorised the look with simple gold and diamond earrings, her typical natural makeup and her hair in loose curls.
William and Kate's Caribbean tour
Kate's pink RIXO dress, which she wore on the final day of the Caribbean tour, saw a 110% spike in searches, earning it the sixth spot in her most popular looks of the year.
The midi-dress featured a button down collar and subtle animal print design. Kate paired the bright look with a matching clutch by Emmy London and wedge heels by Spanish brand Castañer.
Wimbledon women's final
The bright yellow Roksanda dress Kate wore to the Wimbledon women's final in July is the eighth most popular outfit of the year, with a 57% jump in searches. The dress featured short sleeves with an asymmetric bow-like bodice and a full-length flowing skirt.
Kate had previously worn the yellow tea dress back in March when she arrived in Jamaica, this time completing the look with minimal jewellery and wearing her hair down.
Order of the Garter ceremony
Kate’s periwinkle Alexander McQueen coat dress worn to the Order of the Garter ceremony in June is in eighth place, featuring a wide, open collar, built-in belt, and full skirt with box pleats.
The Duchess added a blue fascinator with tonal flowers by Juliette Botterill Millinery to her elegant updo and accessorised with a scalloped-trim clutch, bright blue Aquazura heels and a tanzanite and diamond necklace and earring set by G. Collins & Sons
Official joint portrait with William
Kate’s emerald green The Vampire’s Wife ‘Falconetti’ dress follows in ninth place. She first wore the dress during a visit to Dublin in March 2020 and chose to immortalise the look earlier this year in her first official joint portrait with Prince William.
The shimmering forest green dress has a rounded neckline, mid-length sleeves with a slight ruffle trim, a ruffled skirt, and an all-over metallic sheen, making it the perfect show-stopping look.
40th birthday portraits
The dresses from Kate’s official 40th birthday portraits, all by Alexander McQueen, came in tenth. The portraits are permanently displayed at the National Portrait Gallery, of which the Duchess is a patron.
The first look featured an off-the-shoulder gown, which she paired with earrings once worn by Princess Diana. A second shows her in a striking red Alexander McQueen off-the-shoulder dress, paired with earrings from Queen Elizabeth’s collection. The third is a more relaxed look, again in a ruffled white gown.
