Last year Kate, Princess of Wales launched the first Together at Christmas carol concert at Westminster Abbey, bringing a touch of festive joy to the nation after nearly two years of Covid disruption. The future Queen Consort dazzled on the night, dressing in a very festive red coatdress and showing off her impressive musical skills. So how did Kate’s body language last year compare with this year’s event?
Body language expert Judi James highlighted how Kate signalled some “shyness” while hosting her first Christmas carol concert last year, but luckily Prince William was present to calm her nerves.
Judi said: “Kate did look radiant here, with her dimpled smiles that were aimed at William, along with some softened eye contact to signal warmth and affection.
“His lip-clamped smile with puckering around the mouth suggested he was showing pride in his wife as this was not just her carol service but also her public debut as an accomplished piano player.
“Kate’s body poses did signal modesty and some shyness though, sitting in a self-diminished pose with her shoulders raised and her elbows pulled into her sides. This gives a suggestion of lower self-confidence.
“Her pose standing next to her husband is as mirrored as usual, revealing their signature look of like-minded rapport.
“William’s glance at his wife shows a very softened and affectionate eye expression and this is rewarded with a delighted, beaming smile from Kate.”
For her 2022 concert, Kate was once again joined by William but the pair were on parenting duty as Prince George and Princess Charlotte also attended.
Given the success of last year’s concert, Kate appeared to be even more confident at the 2022 edition, despite the drop of part two of Prince Harry and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex’s bombshell Netflix series that day.

Judi opined: “This year Kate’s body language signals very high levels of confidence and resilience.
“Her chin is raised and her arms are held away from her sides to create the important ‘upturned V’ gap under the armpits that shows determination, as does her almost ‘marching’ walk with those arms swinging at her sides.
“She and William appear with two of their children in a team-styled line-up, with even the matching burgundy outfits giving a uniform impression of bonding and like-mindedness.
“Kate places one protective-looking arm around George’s shoulders and William holds Charlotte’s hand but they look focused on and excited by the event rather than made cautious and wary by the Netflix documentary.”
Other royals who attended the concert in support of Kate included King Charles and the Queen Consort, whom Kate was seen curtsying to on the night.
Sophie, Countess of Wessex, Princess Eugenie, Jack Brooksbank, Princess Beatrice, Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi, Zara Tindall and Mike Tindall were also spotted making their way into the Abbey on Thursday night.
This year the service was dedicated to the life of the late Queen Elizabeth II and the values she represented throughout her seven-decade reign.
The Royal Family said on its website: “Spearheaded by The Princess of Wales, and supported by The Royal Foundation, the service recognised the selfless efforts of individuals, families and communities across the UK, and celebrate and showcase the joy that human connection and togetherness can bring.
“This year’s carol service was dedicated to Her late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and the values Her Majesty demonstrated throughout her life, including duty, empathy, faith, service, kindness, compassion and support for others.
“These principles are shared and personified by the inspirational guests who were invited to the Abbey in recognition of their tireless work to help and care for those around them.
“Combining traditional and modern elements to encompass people of all faiths and none, the service saw the world-renowned Westminster Abbey choir perform some of the nation’s most beloved carols, including ‘O Come, All Ye Faithful’, which was selected through a public poll.”
The carol concert will be broadcast as part of an ITV special, Royal Carols: Together At Christmas, on Christmas Eve.
