Mackenzie Phillips opens up about her 10-year incestuous affair with her own FATHER, Mamas & Papas frontman John, in rare interview with her sister Chynna – revealing how she FORGAVE him after he ‘raped her’ at age 19

Mackenzie Phillips has opened up to sister Chynna about the 10-year incestuous affair she had with their father, The Mamas & the Papas frontman John, revealing how she ultimately forgave him for raping her and turning the abuse into a consensual relationship. 

The 64-year-old One Day At A Time star appeared on Chynna’s YouTube channel where the pair discussed their tumultuous childhoods and the trauma that they carried from those experiences.

Mackenzie, who is the daughter of John and first wife Susan Stuart Adams, made a  bombshell revelation in her 2009 memoir, High On Arrival, claiming that her father first raped her when she was 19 — on the night before her wedding to Jeff Sessler.

But as her life began to spiral out of control on drugs, the sex became consensual for almost a decade, she said.

Mackenzie claimed in her memoir that her father first raped her when she was 19, but as her life began to spiral out of control on drugs, the sex became consensual. Pictured circa 1981

Mackenzie described her father as ‘dark’ and also revealed she had been trolled online for ‘having forgiveness in her heart,’ but it did not mean she ‘co-sign[ed] or agree[d] with what I’m forgiving… him for.’

Delving into the topic of their father, Chynna, whose mother was the frontman’s second wife Michelle, began with saying John was ‘one of my favorite individuals in the whole wide world.’

‘Talk about complex, so many different levels to who he was,’ the 55-year-old singer, who is married to Billy Baldwin, explained.

‘Obviously he’s an amazing songwriter,’ Chynna, who formed pop group Wilson Phillips, said, with Mackenzie adding: ‘Genius.’

‘I loved his laugh. Yet there was this whole other side to Dad that was kind of, like, monster,’ Chynna continued.

‘He had a very dark side,’ Mackenzie said, with Chynna agreeing: ‘He was so dark, and you just didn’t know who you were going to get… it was very unpredictable.’

Chynna then addressed Mackenzie, who is now a substance use counselor, about the fallout of her sister making her affair with her father public.  

‘When I stood by you, I meant it with all my heart… and I believed you and I want you to know that I was proud of you for coming out, even though it was painful for everybody,’ Chynna said.

Mackenzie went on to say: ‘Dad was something else. And I get a lot of criticism and a lot of trolling online for having forgiveness in my heart.

‘Forgiving is for me, not the other person. And forgiving doesn’t mean that I co-sign or agree with what I’m forgiving you for, or him for. It’s very complicated. It’s very, very complicated. And yet, I am at peace.’

Following the shocking revelation, Mackenzie said it took her loved ones a ‘long time but we came back together as a family.’

She also admitted that she felt ‘guilty’ for talking about the ‘conditions of our childhoods.’

Chynna responded: ‘Well, you do have to remember that we are in the top 10 most dysfunctional Hollywood families in America.’

‘And was that in Rolling Stone?’ Mackenzie queried, drawing a laugh from her sister.

‘And the Baldwins were number 10,’ Chynna exclaimed.

‘We were number two, the Kennedys were number one.’

Even with all their past hardships, the Phillips sisters continue to make headlines — with Chynna and Mackenzie’s sibling, Bijou, having a tough year after her estranged husband, Danny Masterson, was convicted of rape

Less than two weeks after his sentencing, Bijou, who shares nine-year-old daughter Fianna with Masterson, filed for divorce. 

Chynna briefly addressed her ‘terribly painful few years,’ which also included her 22-year-old son, Vance, being diagnosed with cancer and ‘the awful incident’ with her brother-in-law, Alec, who faces being charged with involuntary manslaughter for fatally shooting cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the set of his movie, Rust.

In October, New Mexico prosecutors announced they would present a case against Alec to a grand jury.

The actor’s attorney, Luke Nikas, called the decision ‘unfortunate’ and that he intended to fight the case in court.
