Mary-Kate Olsen and Olivier Sarkozy relationship timeline: Inside the pair’s five-year marriage as they get divorced

Mary-Kate Olsen and Olivier Sarkozy have been the hot topic of the week as the fashion mogul recently demanded an "emergency divorce" from New York courts.

Fans of the child star have been following updates on Mary-Kate's life since she was just a little girl starring in the popular American sitcom Full House alongside her twin sister Ashley.

Fully invested in the 33 year old's future fans were delighted to hear about her relationship with the 50 year old, who has two children with former partner Charlotte Bernard, back in 2012.

But their romance was not to last as Mary-Kate recently allegedly claimed that Olivier is forcing her out of her home in the Big Apple.

Here we take a look at the pair's relationship timeline, from the year they first got together to their bitter end.

When did they meet?

According to Entertainment Tonight, Mary-Kate and Olivier first met at a party in early 2012 and were drawn together because of their completely opposite personalities. While the blonde bombshell is apparently shy and an introvert, Olivier is thought to be outgoing.

At the time, a source told the publication: "They're both very driven, intelligent and hard working, so there was definitely mutual respect there."

Although some people were weary of their 17-year age gap, the insider explained that it simply "didn't seem to be a big deal to them."

That same year, the couple were photographed together for the first time as they attended a basketball game between The Dallas Mavericks and The New York Knicks at Madison Square Gardens.

Keen to keep their blossoming relationship private, the pair hardly ever appeared together at public events. However, in August 2013, it's thought that Olivier made her comfortable enough to go to the 4th Annual Apollo In The Hamptons Benefit.

A source told the same publication: "He had a way of making her feel really comfortable even in scenarios she would normally like to avoid."

They added: "He is very funny and charming and personable."

The Proposal

Just two years after Mary-Kate and the French banker first got together, Olivier decided to pop the question in February 2014, with representatives for the two confirming they're engagement.

"Mary-Kate has made him a better father. She remembers all the kids' special events. She thinks he's a great dad," an insider told US Weekly.

They added that her loved ones had a high opinion of him, too, as they said: "Mary-Kate's family thinks Olivier is the best thing to happen to her. They love him."

According to Page Six, the couple tied the knot in front of their nearest and dearest friends and family with an intimate ceremony in New York City on 27 November, 2015.

The reception is thought to have taken place at a private residence, where guests were not allowed to bring their cellphones in.

At the time, a source close to the pair said: "The reception was held at a private residence on 49th Street, between Second and Third avenues; cocktails were served in a rear garden before the 50 guests dined indoors. Attendees were required to turn in their cellphones beforehand."

Home Life

In 2017, Mary-Kate gave a very rare interview about how she was enjoying married life with Olivier and his two children Margot and Julien.

Opening up to Net-a-Poter's The EDIT magazine, she spoke about how she manages work/life balance. She said: "I think [my sister and I] are lucky [working hard] comes quite naturally for us. We don’t need so much time to sit and think and ponder.

"But then I have a husband, two step-kids and a life; I have to go home and cook dinner."

After years of appearing happy at different public engagements, Mary-Kate reportedly filed for divorce from her husband on 17 April.

However, she later demanded an "emergency divorce" from the New York Courts after the coronavirus pandemic slowed the process down.

Her request is thought to have been denied by Judge Michael Katz on Thursday, 14 May.

New York Supreme Court spokesman Lucian Chalfen told Fox News: "Currently, we are only accepting essential/emergency matters for filing. The original filing was rejected by the New York County Clerk because they did not follow the essential matter procedure.

"They refiled under the essential matter procedure and the matter was referred to the ex-parte judge, a New York State Supreme Court judge."

Lucian added: "He determined that it is not an essential matter, so they can't file anything at this point."
