Mother left ‘gobsmacked’ by stranger’s act of kindness in Tesco after asking daughter if she believed in Father Christmas

A mother has been left ‘gobsmacked’ by a stranger’s act of kindness in Tesco after they asked her daughter if she believed in Father Christmas.

Mother-of-seven Beth – who has five adopted children – was doing her weekly shop at her local supermarket in Liverpool earlier this month when one of her daughters was approached by a fellow shopper.

Speaking to the Liverpool Echo, the parent, 49, explained how the woman posed a question about Santa to her daughter as the family were bagging up their shop at the till. 

The anonymous woman asked the little girl if she believed in Father Christmas – and after being told she did, the kind stranger insisted on paying for the family’s £140 shop.

Beth said: ‘I was a little bit gobsmacked and said, “no, no don’t worry”, and all the British things you would say.’

The stunned parent said the woman refused to take no for an answer and also wouldn’t tell her her name as she wanted it to be an anonymous good deed.

However, Beth claims the woman told her that she worked as a banker and wanted to give back to the community following her particularly good financial year.

The unknown woman told the parent that she had paid for several other food shops in the past month amid the ongoing cost of living crisis as it was her way of ‘blessing people’.

After the woman paid for the shop, Beth said she gave her a hug before the family then headed home. 

Although Beth didn’t reveal what her husband does for a living, she admitted that the family have faced financial struggles lately.

She said: ‘My husband’s been on strike recently and not been paid for strike days at the moment. Things have been a lot tighter at the moment, but she wouldn’t have known that.’ 

By sharing her story, Beth hopes the woman hears just how much the gesture meant to her and the family. 

While it undeniably helped financially, the mother says it also gave her and her children ‘a real sense of joy’ ahead of Christmas.
