DEAR DEIDRE: I’M keen to start a family with my girlfriend but she keeps putting it off.
We have been together for five years. I am 32. She is 29 and halfway through a four-year training course.
We agreed to have kids when she qualifies but now she wants to work for another year and then for us to go travelling for 12 months.
That means it could be five years or more before we have a child. I love my girlfriend and would do anything for her but I would be 37 by then.
I don’t want to wait that long. Would it be best to break up with her?
DEIDRE SAYS: I always worry at the idea of ending a loving relationship in order to have a baby with a theoretical someone else.
Suppose you don’t meet the right person or fall for someone who doesn’t want children at all?
Talk to your girlfriend to discover whether this is a timing issue or that she can’t imagine ever wanting children. If she wants them one day her biological clock may start ticking and she could decide she wants to start a family sooner.
Remember you can still be a brilliant dad at any age.
