According to tradition, all members of the Royal Family had to have an “informal conversation” with Queen Elizabeth II before naming their child. It is not clear if this will continue now Charles is King.
In August 1988, Prince Andrew and his wife, Sarah Ferguson, is said to have spoken to the Queen about their new daughter’s potential name.
The couple wanted to call their first born Annabel, according to the Sun, who reported the story at the time.
However, the Queen wasn’t too impressed with this name, believing it to be “too yuppy”.
This was a word that was created in the 1980s and referred “to the group of young upwardly-mobile professionals who made up a large number of the middle and upper-middle class”.
Therefore, not wanting to offend the then monarch, Andrew and Sarah had to decide on another name for their daughter.
The name Victoria was also reportedly ruled out as the Queen was displeased with it, despite it being the bookie’s favourite.
Andrew and Sarah’s firstborn went unnmaed for 11 days until they could decide on an appropriate name.
In the end, it was the Queen herself who suggested the name Beatrice, during the Royal Family’s summer get-together at Balmoral Castle.

Beatrice was finally given the full name Beatrice Elizabeth Mary, with her middle names being a nod to her grandmother and great-grandmother.
The inspiration behind the name could have come from Queen Victoria and Prince Albert’s fifth daughter and youngest child, who was also called Princess Beatrice.
In the programme Beatrice and Eugenie: Pampered Princesses?, Ingrid Seward, editor-in-chief of Majesty Magazine, explained this, saying: “The name Beatrice – it was Queen Victoria’s daughter Beatrice that she was named after.”
Ingrid went on to say there was “huge euphoria” around the time of Beatrice’s birth.
She continued: “Everyone was just delighted that there was another royal baby, and they came out from the hospital and posed outside.”
Royal commentator Wesley Kerr added: “She’s Beatrice Elizabeth Mary, so Beatrice has the names of all English Queens since 1910.”
Royal expert Emily Andrews also commented, saying: “There was national jubilation because here was the first royal Princess since Princess Anne.”
While speaking in an interview with CNN, royal commentator Kate Williams gave more insight into the “informal conversation” royals are supposed to have with the Queen before naming their child.
She said: “The Queen has the power to say what their title is. But in the case of names, it is more of an informal conversation.
“Of course they have such respect for the Queen that if she says ‘I really don’t like that name,’ they’d definitely take that into account.”
Last year, Princess Beatrice and her husband Edoardo welcomed their first child and daughter, Sienna Elizabeth Mapelli Mozzi.
Her sister, Princess Eugenie, has a son, named August.
