Prince Harry and Meghan Markle may have ditched Sussex Royal, but they still insist that Queen Elizabeth does not own the rights to the word “royal.” The couple originally planned to continue working with Sussex Royal following their exit from the monarchy, but Queen Elizabeth vetoed that idea. Although they do not plan on using their royal titles moving forward, the Sussexes made it clear that Her Majesty has no jurisdiction on the matter.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle to end Sussex Royal
One of the consequences of stepping down as senior members of the royal family is the end of Sussex Royal. Harry and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, established the charitable foundation in 2019 following their exit from The Royal Foundation.
The pair left The Royal Foundation amid rumors of a massive feud with Prince William and his wife, Kate Middleton. As royal watchers will recall, Prince Harry and William founded the organization back in 2009. Kate, Duchess of Cambridge joined after she tied the knot with William in 2011.
When they announced their exit from the royal family, PrinceHarry and Markle planned on staying with Sussex Royal as they set up a secondhome-base in North America.
But after negotiating their departure with Queen Elizabeth,Her Majesty forced them to stop using their royal titles altogether. She alsoprohibited them from continuing work with Sussex Royal, a move that the coupleconfirmed on their website.
Inside the new agreement with the monarchy
Prince Harry met with senior members of the royal family in the weeks following the announcement on social media. Following the end of negotiations, Buckingham Palace released a statement detailing what’s ahead for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.
The statement revealed that the royals understand andsupport Harry and Markle’s decision to step away from the royal spotlight. Althoughthey will be viewed as a “valued part” of the monarchy, the couple will not beallowed to use their royal titles for at least a 12-month period.
“The preference of The Duke and Duchess of Sussex was tocontinue to represent and support Her Majesty The Queen albeit in a morelimited capacity, while not drawing on the Sovereign Grant,” the statementread. “While there is precedent for other titled members of the Royal Family toseek employment outside of the institution, for The Duke and Duchess of Sussex,a 12-month review period has been put in place.”
According to Page Six, the palace added that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will be stepping away from all of their royal duties and will not appear in public on behalf of Queen Elizabeth until after the review period has ended. At that time, everything will be re-assessed, though it is unlikely that things will change.
Harry and Markle later confirmed that their exit willofficially take place on March 31. Once that happens, the couple will no longeraccept funding from the crown.

In light of the Buckingham Palace statement, Prince Harry and Markle updated their website to provide some clarity on the issue.
The pair confirmed that they will no longer be working withSussex Royal. They also revealed that they will not use the word “royal” oncetheir exit from the monarchy becomes official, but not before taking a dig atQueen Elizabeth.
“While there is not any jurisdiction by The Monarchy orCabinet Office over the use of the word ‘Royal’ overseas, The Duke and Duchessof Sussex do not intend to use ‘Sussex Royal’ or any iteration of the word‘Royal’ in any territory (either within the UK or otherwise) when thetransition occurs Spring 2020,” their website reads.
The royal family has not commented on Prince Harry and Markle’s latest statement. Inside sources, however, claim that the former Suits star is not happy about the added drama – and she’s letting her friends know exactly how she feels.
How does Meghan Markle feel about leaving Sussex Royal?
While the royals continue to deal with Megxit, inside sources claim that Markle has told her friends that Queen Elizabeth cannot legally stop her and Prince Harry from using the word “royal” in their foundation.
She is also unhappy about the move because she feels asthough it was a petty way to get back at her for leaving the royal family. Marklealso allegedly told her friends that she was not planning on profiting in any wayfrom the brand.
“Meghan said she’s done with the drama and has no room inher life for naysayers, and the same goes for Harry,” the source shared.“Meghan said the global projects they are working on speak for themselves andthey chose that name to protect the royal name, not profit off of it.”
Prince Harry and Markle have not revealed what will replaceSussex Royal after March 31. They are, however, continuing their work in thecharitable and will be launching a new organization in the coming months.
It will be interesting to find out what they call their new endeavor and what the rest of the royal thinks about it. The only thing that is clear is that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will not be using the word “royal” moving forward.
