Sleep expert shares two simple breathing techniques to help you fall asleep fast

Many Brits struggle to sleep at night – a problem which has been worsened by the coronavirus pandemic.

Many of us have new problems we lie awake thinking about, or maybe have had our sleeping patterns ruined by the clocks going forward.

With temperatures reaching as high as 25C this week, many will no doubt experience warm and sticky nights – another reason you might struggle to sleep.

Luckily, James Wilson aka The Sleep Geek, has shared two amazing techniques which will help you fall asleep.

James is one of the UK’s leading sleep behaviour experts, and has shared two breathing techniques with Daily Star.

James told us: “The reason slowing our breathing down helps us fall asleep and stay asleep is that it drops our heart rate.

“A drop in heart rate is an important part of the process that drives us towards sleep. Poor sleepers I work with use these techniques either before bed or when they wake in the night and they are particularly useful when we worry about not falling to sleep, the panic starts to raise which leads to a faster heart rate.

“It is always good to have a couple of different breathing techniques, as you can move through the if one doesn’t seem to be helping you relax.”

Box Breathing

James said: “Breathe in for four seconds, hold for four seconds, out for four seconds and then rest for four seconds.”

The “The” Technique

James explained: “Close your eyes and imagine a white light at the end of a tunnel.

“Focus on the light, whilst breathing from your stomach and say the word ‘The’ over and over again. The focus on this helps stop your brain jumping off onto other thoughts and helps slowly drop your heart rate.”
