The 345 places where Covid cases are still rising – is YOURS on the list?

CORONAVIRUS cases are still rising in 345 places in the UK and this interactive map reveals if your local area is on the list.

While cases have climbed in 92 per cent of places, they have now started to fall across London, which had been the Omicron capital.

Infections have fallen in eight per cent of areas in the last week and the map above shows current infection rates.

Omicron is now responsible for the majority of cases in the UK and has taken over from the Delta variant.

Experts have however this week said that Omicron cases may have peaked, after three million Brits had Covid on New Year's Eve.

A string of hugely positive studies show Omicron IS milder than other strains, with the first official UK report revealing the risk of hospitalisation is 50 to 70 per cent lower than with Delta.

Covid booster jabs protect against Omicron and offer the best chance to get through the pandemic, health officials have repeatedly said.

The Sun's Jabs Army campaign is helping get the vital extra vaccines in Brits' arms to ward off the need for any new restrictions.

The 2 ‘strange’ Omicron symptoms – and how fast they strike

Derry City & Strabane in Northern Ireland has the highest rate of infections in the UK, with 6,680 new cases in the seven days to January 1, the equivalent of 4,420.6 per 100,000 people.

This is up from a rate of 1,624.7 for the seven days to December 25.

Fermanagh & Omagh in Northern Ireland has the second highest rate, up from 1,283.5 to 3,510.4, with 4,119 new cases.

Chair of the British Medical Association's Northern Ireland Council, Dr Tom Black this week said that no new restrictions would now stop the spread of Omicron.

He explained that people would now just have to work through the next six weeks in order to take control of infections.

"This will include another two weeks of a huge infection rate, two or three weeks after that will be hospitalisations – hopefully not in large numbers and not too much pressure on Intensive Care Units.

"The pattern so far is that hospitalisations are not as bad as they were last January with the Delta variant", he told DerryNow.

Copeland in Cumbria has the third highest rate, up from 1,336.0 to 3,076.1, with 2,093 new cases.

The director of public health in the area said that they have 'never seen cases so high'.

Colin Cox, Cumbria's director of Public Health said pressure is now piling up on health services.

"We all know what we can do; avoid crowds, wear a mask, wash hands, ventilate indoor spaces, get tested if you have symptoms or before you meet with people, and of course, get vaccinated", he said.

Copeland is the fourth area to have seen the biggest jump and is followed by Mid Ulster in Northern Ireland, which has seen a jump from 1,062.1 cases per 100,000 to 2,715.0.

DOMINANT STRAIN

Yesterday a further 194,747 new Covid cases were reported and another 334 deaths were logged, taking the tragic toll to 149,284.

Yesterday's new fatalities are higher than the past few days – but this is also because they include a backlog of hospital deaths unreported by NHS England since January 1.

Cases have risen sharply in the past month since Omicron arrived in the UK, but while it spreads quickly, the variant has been found to be a less serious illness.

The ONS infection survey for last week shows 3.7million people were infected with Covid – up from 2.3million in the week before Christmas.

Sarah Crofts, Head of Analytical Outputs for the Covid-19 Infection Survey said: "We continue to see infections across the UK increase, with Omicron now the dominant variant across all four nations.

“There are early signs of a potential slowing of infections in London in the days before New Year’s Eve. However, it is too early to suggest this is a change in trend overall.

“The data continues to change rapidly, and we will continue to monitor the situation closely.”
