‘Food fraud’ isn’t a new concept, but it’s only now that people are discovering a hidden ingredient in bread that may just make you gag.
Researchers commissioned by Privilege insurance found, in 2019, that the bread we buy in supermarkets may contain human hair.
The report detailed the top 20 secrets behind British consumer’s favourite staples, from breast implants in chicken nuggets to beaver castor sacs in your vanilla ice cream.
However, it is hair in bread that has been picked up as one of the most troublesome ingredients.

The amino acids found in factory-made bread can be made of hair as well as duck feathers, cow horns and pig bristles.
It is the amino acid L-Cysteine that is used to prolong shelf-life in products and is reported to mainly come from China.
Most of the hair used to make L-Cysteine comes from China, where it is gathered from barbershops and hair salons.
You can avoid this by purchasing fresh bread from a bakery, as it is not an additive in flour.

Elsewhere, the report revealed that the ‘vanilla’ taste in ice cream actually comes from beavers’ castor sacs.
The report stated: ‘Castoreum, which comes from the castor sacs of male and female beavers and is used by them – in combination with urine – to mark their territories, is an FDA-approved food additive popular in ice-creams, and allowed to be called “natural flavouring”, meaning you probably don’t know that you are eating it. It is also used in perfumes.’
In addition, certain chicken nuggets are only made from 50 per cent actual chicken with the rest including synthetic ingredients such as dimethylpolysiloxane – a chemical used in silicone that can be found in Silly Putty as well as breast implant filler.
It was only recently that The Sun found a strange ingredient in beer, that you may not know about.
Isinglass is a gelatine-like substance made from the swim bladder of fish.
It is added to unfiltered and unpasteurised beer to help remove any unwanted yeast and solid particles.
