Paul O’Grady’s Great British Escape viewers admit they ‘can’t watch’ because it’s too ‘upsetting’ after presenter’s death aged 67

  • READ MORE: Paul O’Grady’s ‘last bit of filming’ before his death at the age of 67 is revealed to be for an iconic BBC show that he ‘wasn’t a fan’ of

Heartbroken ITV viewers have admitted they struggled to watch Paul O’Grady’s Great British Escape, which aired last night.

Audiences at home said it was too ‘upsetting’ to see the late presenter on their screens after the popular 2020 series was broadcast once again.

Paul died as a result of a cardiac arrest, following a history of heart problems, on March 28 2023, aged just 67.

Last night’s repeat left many of his fans emotional, with some even admitting they couldn’t watch the much loved programme due to becoming too upset.

One fan wrote on X, formerly Twitter: ‘Just watching Paul O’Grady’s Great British Escape… it hits home how much the world has lost without him being in it.’

Another added: ‘I want to watch but can’t – upsets me so much.’ However, a third said: ‘So good to see Paul O’Grady on my telly again. He’s really missed.’

In the opening episode, Paul’s Kent staycation kicked off with him seeking out why the county – in which he lived – is nicknamed the ‘Garden of England’.

Despite being emotional for some viewers, this will not be the only series of Paul’s to be seen on the TV this year.

It was revealed days earlier that the late presenter is returning to screens in a final project recorded before his death – Paul O’Grady’s Great Elephant Adventure.

The two-part documentary – filmed in 2022 – will show the Lily Savage star exploring elephant rescue centres. It will air before the end of the year, according to ITV.

Viewers will see how Paul travelled through Thailand and paid tribute to the tireless work of elephant conservation centres dedicated to rescuing, rehabilitating and protecting the magnificent yet vulnerable mammals.

He also leaves the sanctuaries for a taste of local life by exploring nearby markets and sampling what cuisine there is on offer.

Meanwhile, Paul O’Grady’s final series of For The Love Of Dogs has received a nomination for 2023’s National Television Awards (NTAs), less than six months after he died.

The shortlist of nominees were announced on August 15, and the late comedian’s series, which aired from April 13, is in the Factual category for an 11th consecutive year.

Throughout his career, Paul made it known how much he loved and cared for animals – especially dogs – often adopting many from his 11-series show himself.

Battersea Dogs and Cats Home – who host the show – said that they were ‘honoured’ by the programme’s nomination and will ‘forever be proud of this show and grateful for all the work our loved and missed Ambassador, Paul O’Grady, has done.’

Paul O’Grady: For The Love Of Dogs is up against Clarkson’s Farm, Sort Your Life Out, and The Martin Lewis Money Show Live to take over from Gogglebox.

The ITV regular has won this bracket in three of its 11 straight years of nomination.

The NTAs are due to be held on September 5, live from London’s O2 Arena and broadcast on ITV, and hosted by Joel Dommett.

Paul died as a result of a cardiac arrest, following a history of heart problems, on March 28 2023.

He is survived by his husband Andre Portasio, who recently attended the British LGBT Awards in June and collected a Broadcaster of the Year award on his behalf.

He told the Daily Star in June that he had not left the house in months after the star’s death, adding: ‘I am trying to take it day by day and cope with it. At the moment I am coping.

‘It was such a shock for me to lose him. It was a shock to all of us. It was so unexpected. I am still digesting it all.’
