Wedding rules amid the coronavirus pandemic forced couples across the country to postpone their ceremonies this year, as the disease forced people behind closed doors without socialisation. Ceremonies, and especially the receptions following, often host crowds of people, establishing ripe conditions for spreading COVID-19. Now the Government has repealed some of the more draconian measures, people can hold ceremonies once again, but under predetermined conditions.
What are wedding rules for the UK?
The Government has now introduced a tiered system for handling COVID-19, which prescribes measures depending on local case rates.
Tier 1 presents the least restrictive measures, leaving people to “common sense” and abiding by national rules.
The upper two tiers introduce more restrictive policies, however, limiting the way people socialise and the businesses available to them.
Wedding rules in Tier 1
Tier 1 restrictions bind people to international rules only, including a limit on gatherings.
Ministers have capped the public group limit at six, but they have slightly relaxed the rules for weddings.
A maximum of 15 people can attend a wedding ceremony and following “coronavirus secure” sit-down reception.
Wedding rules in Tier 2
Tier 2 is where local restrictions come into force which people will have to obey on top of national rules.
The tier limits the number of people who can gather in each other’s homes, with only those in the same household or bubble able to do so.
Weddings remain the same, however, with a 15 person maximum for ceremonies and the following reception.

Wedding rules in Tier 3
The Government has employed tier-three rules in areas with the highest case rates.
As such, they have clamped down in these places the most, limiting social and business contact even further.
Under this tier, up to 15 people may still attend a ceremony, but the policy outlaws wedding receptions altogether.
Tier 3 residents planning a wedding may end up tempted to host the service and reception in another area.
But the Government has ensured people contained under maximum restrictions cannot spread the virus further.
Current rules mean those travelling from one tier to another take the restrictions of their hometown with them.
So those hoping to travel from a Tier 3 area to a Tier 1 to have a reception still can’t do so.
