Italy, Spain, Greece, Croatia – these are just a few of the countries experiencing blistering heatwaves this summer.

Holiday-goers have been put up in make shift shelters and are being rapidly evacuated from Rhodes, where wildfires have taken hold, with desperate families being forced to flee on foot in the 40+ degree heat before making it back to the airports.

Elsewhere, tourists have had to stay inside, with beach temperatures just too hot to bear at their destination.

Whether you were forced to return home or you’ve cancelled the holiday you had planned, you may be thinking of heading elsewhere this summer.

So, in order to holiday safely, mild weather is at the top of the must-have list for many. But where in Europe is remaining relatively untouched by the heatwave?

Sweden

Ah the fabulous Nordic country home to mountains, lakes, forests and, of course, ABBA.

Once a Viking stomping ground, the serene and affordable destination also happens to be somewhat sheltered from this year’s scorching heatwave.

With usual temperatures for July and August sitting at around 22 or 23 degrees, the heatwave has only pushed that expected temperature up to 25, meaning Sweden is still well out of the heat danger zone.

If you’re a fan of hiking and seafood then it could be the perfect summer holiday destination. Not to mention flights start from just £28.

Denmark

If you equate summer holidays with beaches Denmark may not jump out at you as a suitable alternative to Greece or Spain, but, it has a surprising amount of coastline for you to indulge in.

Blokhus Beach is a great spot to visit on the Nordic coastline with gorgeous white sand and lovely dunes.

And while it’s not baking hot, it peaks at a very lovely 26 degrees and is currently sitting at just about 20 degrees – making it safe holiday weather.

If you’re not fussed about beaches then why not indulge yourself in the coastal capital, Copenhagen.

Czech Republic

While a family holiday here may not be at the top of your list, what with Prague being a Mecca for stag dos, it actually has boat loads of culture to offer.

You’ve got Prague Castle for starters, Charles Bridge and the Old Town Square – you could even day trip it to Vienna.

And while Prague is a little on the warmer side, 28 degrees currently to be precise, it’s still not in dangerous heat territory – although definitely take your sun hats kids.

It’s also not going to set you back a pretty penny with flights starting at a respectable £39 return.

Germany

If you’re a fan of a historical trip then there are few places better for one than Germany, but it’s also great for nightlife and a bit of a party.

We guess you could say there’s something for everyone, from the Reichstag Building and other World War II sites, as well as clubs and bars in Berlin and Munich.

And again, while the heatwave is leaving much of Europe in disarray, Germany is just 24 degrees on average.

You may have to deal with the occasional patch of rain, but it’s better than passing out in the heat.

Poland

Now, Poland is a choice this summer for those of you who enjoy working on your tan because the heat is peaking at around 30 degrees.

Yes, it’s a lot, but it’s not creeping up to the likes of Rhodes or Italy.

And Poland has lots to offer including salt mines, museums, castles and great food and drink in Krakow or Warsaw.

What’s not to like?

Slovenia

Is Slovenia usually known for it’s mountains and ski resorts? Yes. But that doesn’t mean it can’t make a great summer escape.

The lakes offer stunning views and great hiking trails for all levels are available.

One particularly gorgeous city is Piran with stunning Venetian architecture which you can enjoy under a sun that isn’t threatening sun stroke.

Peaking at 28 degrees it’s warm but again, it’s not dangerous. You’ll come back with your health and a tan.

Switzerland

Now, this isn’t a country for those looking for a cheap getaway. In fact, it’s one of the most expensive countries in the world.

However, the home of chocolate and dazzling watches does have a lot to offer.

From the Swiss National Park to stargazing and boating, there are countless activities to keep you entertained, if you’re willing to splash the cash.

The temperature is sitting at a comfortable 24 degrees in most areas and will possibly peak at around 29 degrees – although that heat won’t last.

Norway

Last, but certainly not least, Norway is one of the chillier destinations we’ve got for you.

The temperature may be barely breaking 20 degrees but there is a bucket load of history and culture to keep you entertained.

There’s Oslo’s Viking Ship Museum towns with stunning wooden chalets and plenty of opportunities to hike and try your hand at fishing!

And did we mention…it’s breathtakingly beautiful.
