Gemma, 42
Dating Past
Gemma, 42, (pictured) has been single for 10 years
I have a daughter from a long-term relationship that began in my early 20s. After that ended, I met my now ex-husband and had another daughter. We were together for 11 years until I discovered he’d cheated several times — I found out about them all at once. Since then, I’ve forgotten the last time I went out on a date.
Pre-Date Nerves?
VITAL STATISTICS
Divorced, single for 10 years. Two daughters, 22 and 14.
Current Role
Nursery school teacher.
Would Like To Meet
A man who has a sarcastic sense of humour and who’s a supportive, all-rounder type. I run a mile from needy narcissists.
GEMMA’S Verdict: 6/10
LIKED? The cocktails.
REGRETS? None — it was a lovely experience.
COFFEE OR CAB? Cab.
Yes, a blind date in a newspaper is a very public thing to do.
First Impressions?
Steve was already at our table when I arrived. He said I looked lovely in my green dress and the staff complimented me on it, too. He had a friendly face but seemed to feel uncomfortable in his surroundings. I was disappointed he didn’t have a beard — I love men with beards.
Easy To Talk To?
He told me he wasn’t going to have a starter as there was nothing he recognised on the menu. I gently advised him to leave his comfort zone — and ordered him the squid. And guess what? He liked it.
A friend had suggested I make the date fun by having a different cocktail with each course. I didn’t get tipsy, I’m pretty good at handling alcohol. We talked about Steve’s love of Marvel films and we joked about the staff knowing we were on a blind date because the waitress had given me a little nod and smile.
Embarrassing Moments?
My LOBSTER linguine was simply an empty plate and the waiter even joked it was invisible. I wondered what on earth was going on, until he brought a bowl of delicious pasta and placed it on the plate, which was just for display. Steve had joked they’d forgotten me so we both laughed when it finally came.
Did Sparks Fly?
Not on my part. I didn’t flirt as I didn’t want to lead him on. I like the manly Viking look, and am upbeat and open-minded, whereas Steve was rather negative.
See him again?
Probably not. Steve is a great guy but he’s not my cup of tea. Sorry, Steve.
What do you think he thought of you?
I hope he thought I was kind and funny. The date ended with a goodbye hug outside the restaurant. I told Steve it was lovely to meet him, and I meant that.
Would your friends like him?
My friends would think Steve is a lovely guy, but not for me.
Steve, 39
Dating Past
Steve, 39, (pictured) has been single for five years
Over the years, I’ve had a couple of serious relationships. I have full custody of my daughter and in her childhood I decided to take a break from dating to focus on her, as well as my work. I’ve been dating for a couple of years now, but nothing serious.
Pre-Date Nerves?
On a scale of one to ten, I was ten for nerves. This is so far out of my comfort zone. But I don’t want to have any regrets later in life, so why not? My daughter thinks I’m crazy for taking part, though.
VITAL STATISTICS
Single for five years with a 14-year-old daughter.
CURRENT ROLE
Delivery driver.
WOULD LIKE TO MEET
Someone with amazing eyes and a positive outlook on life. I’m not looking for a woman who likes travelling to far-flung destinations.
STEVE’S Verdict: 7.5/10
LIKED? Her love of cocktails.
REGRETS? No, I’m glad I’ve done it.
ICOFFEE OR CAB? Cab.
First Impressions?
When Gemma arrived, I stood up and gave her a kiss on the cheek. She was attractive and bubbly, walking in with lots of energy and a big smile. I particularly noticed her hair looked good. I think I gave her a compliment on her dress and told her she looked nice. I’m not sure if she appreciated it, although I think all women like to be told they look good.
Easy To Talk To?
Yes, absolutely. Posh restaurants are not my thing. I’m a simple type when it comes to food, so I ordered a burger and fries. As we were in an upmarket place, I ate it with a knife and fork.
I noted that Gemma ordered the most expensive dish on the menu, and worked her way through five cocktails, too, although she never once seemed drunk. I stuck to just one beer because I can say silly things at the best of times.
Embarrassing Moments?
Probably ordering Gemma the strongest cocktail on the menu by mistake. She nipped to the loo and said I should order something to surprise her. I made it clear I wasn’t trying to get her drunk.
Did Sparks Fly?
There wasn’t much flirting going on. She was a nice woman and I thought she looked well presented, I just didn’t fancy her. But we had a nice meal.
See her again?
Probably not. We didn’t exchange contact details.
What do you think she thought of you?
I’d like to think she enjoyed my company. When we left, I gave her a kiss on the cheek.
Would your friends like her?
Yes, Gemma is an attractive woman and has lots of energy.
