Deodorants come in all shapes and sizes – but most of them aren't packaged in recyclable materials.

According to the latest research, it's estimated that eight million pieces of plastic end up in our oceans every single day – including some of our trusty roll-ons.

So with this in mind, we were looking forward to putting the Wild deodorant to the test, and doing our bit to live more sustainably.

We won't lie, when we first started testing out the Wild deodorant, we were worried. Especially when we were told it could take a week or two for our body to settle into a natural deodorant – but thankfully, it didn't take too long.

It made us think about all the chemicals we've been rolling on our pits for years, not paying attention to what these harsh ingredients were doing to our skin – causing rashes and blocking our pores.

The Wild natural deodorant arrived in a letterbox-sized, recyclable cardboard box and included an anodised aluminium case – as well as three compostable deodorant refills.

We went for the limited edition love heart case, which was personalised (it only costs an extra £5 on the Wild site) with our names on and looked really stylish – it made a change from the bright green, garish plastic roll-on we were using previously.

The refill scents sounded amazing, and totally unisex, including fresh cotton and sea salt, and jasmine and mandarin blossom – we chose to use a sultry, woody patchouli and sandalwood scent first.

We were pleased to see that the pack had no unnecessary packaging, was totally plastic-free and had helpful illustrated instructions on the inner lid.

Wild deodorant compostable refills

Wild's refills are world-first when it comes to deodorant – they're packed in plant-based material that can be popped in the food waste bin or compost to decompose into plant feed.

They contain no hidden chemicals – that means no aluminium, parabens, or sulphates – and their formulas are dermatologically tested and felt gentle on the skin.

The range of scents we got in our refill pack were varied and gender-neutral, but Wild have plenty more online including orange and neroli, coconut and vanilla, and limited edition ranges, like chocolate fondue and salted caramel popcorn.

How long do Wild refills last?

Each refill is expected to last around two months, if you use two to three swipes under each arm a day.

Wild natural deodorant works the same way as any other roll-on option – just swipe it under your arms a couple of times to apply.

When you first get the pack you'll need to put in the refill, but it's super simple – we've outlined how to do it below.

How do I refill my Wild deodorant?

Refilling your Wild deodorant is simple:

• Twist the bottom of the case as far as it will go
• Push the buttons on each side of the case
• Pull the bottom of the case down and remove the used deodorant case
• Remove the lid from the new refill and insert the refill into the case
• Put the lid back on the bottom of the case
• Twist the bottom of the case to move the deodorant up, and that's it

How long does it take for Wild deodorant to work?

Everybody is different, but we found that it took us about a week for our body to settle into the all-natural, chemical-free deodorant.

It is effective and works, but it shouldn't affect your day-to-day routine too much. We found that we were sweating a little more than usual in the first two to three days, but didn't smell bad.

Wild says this is totally natural, and have put together a handy guide if you get stuck or you're unsure.

It takes time to adjust because our bodies are used to years of harsh chemicals on our underarms.

Often, the body overcompensates for the lack of aluminium, which is found in your average deodorant, by producing more sweat when you first use a natural deodorant.

After around seven days, your body should be used to your transition to a natural deodorant – but it could take a little more time for some. Embrace the changes knowing it does good for you, and the planet.

Which scents can I choose from?

Wild deodorant has a wide selection of scents to choose from and regularly introduces new and limited-edition options.

Regular options include fresh cotton and sea salt, mint and aloe vera, jasmine and mandarin blossom, orange and neroli, sandalwood and patchouli, and coconut and vanilla.

There's also a range of deodorants available for sensitive underarms.

The only difference between these and their original non-sensitive counterparts is that the sensitive version contains no baking soda.

Baking soda is a useful ingredient in deodorants as it helps to neutralise odour, but it can irritate particularly sensitive armpits.

Is Wild deodorant worth it?

One hundred times yes – we couldn't imagine going back to plastic and chemical-laden deodorants of old.

We smelt great, our underarm skin felt soft and we could rest easy knowing that our once-plastic roll-ons weren't choking the planet.

It feels like Wild have hit the nail on the head with their natural deodorant, and have got absolutely everything right.

It's a little pricier than your average deodorant, we get it, but it's a small price to pay to help save the planet.

Wild shampoo bars review

Just like its natural deodorant, one of the main selling points for Wild’s shampoo bars (which launched in January 2023) is that they’re plastic-free and therefore more environmentally friendly than liquid shampoos. 

While this compact little bar might seem expensive, shampoo bars are actually proven to last two to three times longer than liquid shampoo due to the concentrated formula. 

After one wash, this baby didn’t shrink at all. We reckon you’ll get at least 20 washes per bar, which means you’re only spending around 40p per wash. 

A major concern that most people have regarding shampoo bars is that they don’t always lather like regular shampoo. However, that’s not an issue with this product.

Rubbing a bar of soap onto your hair in the shower feels slightly jarring at first, but it very quickly begins to lather and is easily spread around the scalp and lengths of your hair.

In fact, we found that a bar helps you to use less product. It’s easily rinsed out of your hair, too. 

We tried the coconut and vanilla scent, and we found it had a pleasant, sweet smell that is definitely noticeable throughout use and still subtly present once your hair is dry.

We also found that, thanks to ingredients like almond and jojoba oil, it left our hair instantly softer, smoother, and not as tangled compared to regular shampoo — even before using conditioner.

If you have slightly greasier hair than the average person, like us, you might normally wash your hair daily or every other day. But, that will probably change with this bar.

We found it does such a thorough clean that we could leave our hair for three to four full days before washing it again. Pretty amazing, right?

Wild soap review

If you're looking to switch to bar soap in your bathroom at home, try Wild's natural soap. At £10 for three bars, these are pretty affordable. Plus, we can confirm they're very pleasant to use.

Often, soap bars can leave a residue that makes your hands feel sticky. Or, they can make your skin feel stripped of moisture and uncomfortably squeaky clean.

Admittedly, using this soap was a bit of a roller coaster. To start with, we were amazed by how much it lathered and the floral and citrus smell that filled the room (we tried the jasmine and mandarin bar).

Then, we started to panic a little bit as that squeaky clean feeling crept up while we were rubbing our palms together under the water.

However, as soon as we'd washed off the soap and dried our hands, all was right again. The soap actually left our hands feeling clean, soft and nourished.

This squeaky clean problem only happened on the first use, though. Every single other time, it was a pleasure to use from start to finish. The pretty jasmine and mandarin scent will linger on your hands for a while after washing them, too.

If you're usually a liquid soap kind of person and hate the idea of a bar of soap, you may actually like this one.

Whether you have a soap dish or not, we found that this one — unlike most bar soaps — doesn't stick to the sink when you've finished using it, or leave a horrible soapy residue.

Once you've started using Wild, you won't want to go a day without it. And if you switch back to a regular deodorant for a couple of days, your body will have to go through the process of getting used to natural deodorant again.

So what do you do when travelling, if you're packing particularly light? Use Wild's mini deodorant.

These are ideal for holidays, staycations, overnight stays, trips to the gym, and to carry in your handbag to keep B.O. at bay.

They're exactly the same formula as the full-sized product — the only difference is their packaging and size.

The packaging is made from 100% recycled cardboard, which is great.

However, we do have one complaint. You're supposed to lift the lid, push up the deodorant from the base, and then apply it, but the pushing up process is a little tricky (especially if you have long fingernails).

Once you give the stick a good squeeze along the sides to soften the product though, it'll pop up smoothly every time.
