Jack Brooksbank is going from professional tequila enthusiast to member of the royal family in just a few days (October 12! Mark you cal! Here’s how you can watch the festivities! Goodbye!), so you’re probably wondering whether he’s going to get his own fancy-shmancy title. Sure, this posh gent is marrying Princess Eugenie, but that doesn’t necessarily mean he’ll become a prince. Or a Duke. Or an Earl. Or a Viscount, whatever that is. In fact, he might not get a title at all because:
There’s Tons of Drama Around the Subject
Back in 2016, there were rumors that Eugenie’s dad Prince Andrew was being super petty and insisting that his daughters’ future husbands get earldoms so that their children would be officially royal. A source told The Daily Mail at the time that Andrew was worried a lack of title would mean “his daughters’ children will be commoners, defined as one of the ordinary or common people, as opposed to the aristocracy or to royalty.” GOD FORBID!
Rumors about Prince Andrew’s obsession with status got so out of hand that he ended up having to issue an awkward public statement, saying “It is a complete fabrication to suggest I have asked for any future husbands of the Princesses to have titles.” Hm, okay.
Plus, There’s *Proof* Jack Isn’t Getting a Title
Said proof is a buncha fancy tea cups, aka the most British piece of evidence ever. Basically, the Royal Collection Trust released official wedding china for Jack and Eugenie, and while royal watchers quickly noticed that her personal monogram features a crown, Jack’s doesn’t. And neither does their joint monogram.
[email protected] has released a new line of items to celebrate Princess Eugenie’s wedding to Jack Brooksbank.
You will notice Eugenie’s solo monogram features a crown, as she is an HRH. But the couple’s joint monogram & Jack’s solo monogram doesn’t have a crown. pic.twitter.com/cZwcvdsJl0
If you compare that to Harry and Meghan’s joint monogram, which does feature a crown, then it seems pretty obvious that Jack won’t be getting a royal title:

But Wait, Why Did Meghan Get a Title?
You may recall that Meghan Markle morphed into a Duchess upon marrying Prince Harry…so why does NO1CURR about Jack? Possibly because a) Harry occupies a much higher spot in the line of succession than Eugenie, and b) Meghan is a “working royal.” Meaning she’s carrying out official duties on behalf of the royal family, while Eugenie and Jack are not. Of course, the Queen *could* offer Jack a courtesy earldom, but he would likely turn it down. Why, you ask? Because of history.
“Jack will not be getting any title from the Queen,” royal historian Marlene Eilers Koenig told Hello! Magazine. “The precedent was set by Princess Alexandra and the Hon. Mr. Angus Ogilvy in 1963. He turned down an earldom. Princess Anne and Mark Phillips also turned down an earldom from the Queen in 1973.”
Keep in mind that we won’t officially know Jack’s status until after the royal nuptials on Friday, but it’s not looking good.
