WithWimbledon back on our screens, those who follow the professional tennis tournament may be aware that participants must follow a number of guidelines when taking to the court. As part of these guidelines, theDaily Star alleges that one particular rule meant that some professional female tennis players were left braless during 2014’s tournament.
All players are required to follow Wimbledon’s traditional white dress code and are expected to wear attire that is “almost entirely white”,according to Wimbledon’s website. As outlined in Wimbledon’s rules, players must minimise wearing other colours, including cream and off-white.
The website states that this rule applies to people’s undergarments, too. It reads: “Any undergarments that either are or can be visible during play (including due to perspiration) must also be completely white except for a single trim of colour no wider than one centimetre (10mm).”
As a result, several players have hit the headlines throughout the tournament’s history by appearing to deviate from the rules.
But in 2014, former Wimbledon winner Pat Cash claimed that some female tennis stars had been told to change their bras due to them breaking the tournament’s guidelines.
“Some of the girls have been told to go back and change their bras and tops because they had slight colour on them,” she told BBC Radio 5 Live at the time.
“I believe some of the girls didn’t have suitable sports bras and had to go without them. It has absolutely gone ridiculous.”
While Pat’s claims weren’t confirmed, it’s alleged that the strict rules affected top players including Britain’s Naomi Broady, who seemed to be braless during her match against Caroline Wozniacki.
In 2017, tennis legend Venus Williams appeared to deviate from the all white dress code and changed her pink bra mid-match in order to abide by its guidelines.
After the match, an official explained: “Underwear should be white.” But during a press conference, Venus, whose sister Serena made her return to the tournament this year, wasn’t as keen to discuss the gaffe.
“What pink bra? I don’t like talking about bras in press conferences. It’s weird,” she said. “I don’t want to talk about my undergarments. It’s kind of awkward for me. I’ll leave that to you. You can talk about it with your friends. I’m going to pass.”
Away from the action on the court, spectators have made a splash thanks to their choice in outfits, too. Kate Middletonrecently used the tournament to show off her thrifty side after she arrived at this year’s quarter-finals wearing a blue polka dot dress she'd sported last month.
