When Ashley Ness went for a routine check-up back in February, she was thrilled to find out she was expecting a child with her boyfriend Val.
But the surprises didn’t stop there.
When the 35-year-old went for an ultrasound two weeks later, she discovered that she was pregnant with not one, but four babies.
Ashley – who already has an eight-year-old daughter – was even more shocked to hear that the babies were not quadruplets, but two sets of identical twins.
Her unique situation even baffled the ultrasound technician.
‘When she first started the scan, she was looking at the screen and wrote, “A, B,” so I stopped and looked at her and was like: “Wait, I’m having twins?”‘ Ashley told Good Morning America.
‘And she’s like, “Oh I don’t know … I’m going to step out for a minute.”’
When she returned, a doctor confirmed that Ashley was expecting four babies – two boys and two girls – and that she was experiencing a double-pregnancy, which is a ‘one in 70 million’ occurrence.
An incredibly rare conception meant Ashley was expecting two sets of identical twins, as two of her eggs were fertilised at the same time, before both splitting.
This resulted in her conceiving two separate sets of identical siblings.
After getting over the initial shock, the couple are now excited for the new arrivals – especially since Ashley struggled with infertility for years.
‘I had a very hard time conceiving my daughter and I’ve had miscarriages in the past,’ the hairdresser adds.
‘So I feel like to be able to be blessed with something so big is so amazing.
‘When I conceived, it was right before my grandmother had passed away too. So I feel as if it was almost like a gift from her, like sending back the losses that I had. That’s truly how I do feel.’
Ashley says she feels honoured that such a rare thing has happened to her and is excited to see just how much they all look alike.
However, the 35-year-old adds that she’s slightly worried about the demands four newborn babies will bring.
And, in order to accommodate her growing family, Ashley plans to buy a new van and expand their home – ahead of their expected arrival in August.
As a result, she’s now started a GoFundMe page in an attempt to help pay for the costs of the expansion – and has raised nearly $9,000 so far.
