Wrap yourself in red from head to toe
- Showstopping bright red is set to rule over fashion looks over this season
- Dinah van Tulleken says designers like Max Mara are behind the flashy trend
- The vibrant hue is both elegant and uplifting for a variety of different outfits
I know, I know, following Valentino’s AW22 catwalk show, we’re all supposed to be wearing hot pink, but when I shop I want it to last years… decades if possible. And I fear fuchsia is a flash in the fashion pan.
So set your fluoro daydreams to one side. This fashion season the colour you really want to go for, and please trust me here, is traffic-stopping red — elegant, arresting and timeless.
It was the Max Mara AW22 catwalk that convinced me.
When a model came sashaying down the runway in a floor-length red fisherman’s roll-neck chunky-knit jumper dress with a matching red rib balaclava and red boots, clutching a fluffy red bag, it was an epiphany.

And Max Mara wasn’t alone. Designers decreed that the modern way to wear ruby tones is colour-drenched, from top to toe.
And I couldn’t agree more — it’s a sure-fire way to look chic and pulled together, and lift your spirits while you’re at it.
If you’re looking to spend a little more than usual, head to Cefinn whose classic wool suit in crimson (above, third from right), is top of my Christmas wish list.
The single-breasted blazer nips in beautifully at the waist and I love the turn-up on the trousers.

The brand’s Jacquetta velvet dress (above, second from left) is also worth a look. It’s an elegant party piece that will see you through many seasons of fun.
But this isn’t a trend you need to blow the budget on.
Warehouse has a jersey crepe cut-out detail midi for only £35; a fabulous winter coat from Primark is just £38.
It may be a fabulously festive colour but follow the colour-drench formula and red isn’t just for Christmas — it’s a classic you can wear all year round.
